just curious how you were able to persuade your IT dept to get you a powerbook? i work in IT and they would never allow me to do such a thing. i had them buy me the next best thing...a thinkpad.

I generally do a complete system re-install and upgrade to get rid of localizations I don't need, etc.

Calibrating the battery is very important and shouldn't be overlooked - glad to see you've got that on your list already.

Otherwise, there isn't a lot to worry about. These things just work. Or, at least, I hope they do. I'm supposed to be getting a replacement for my work TiBook soon (put in the paperwork today).

How does one calibrate the battery? Does this simply mean setting power preferences in System Prefs? Or is there something that I do not know?

I work for a printing and design company. Unfortunately, though, it's a large one, so IT isn't necessarily real Mac-literate. But I (along with a couple hundred others) have to have one to do my job, so justifying it is easy.

Apple has a few articles on it, some of which would be specific to your model. In fact, your user guide should provide information on calibration.

Here's a sample.

thanks for the replies. so far i love this thing. and i know i'll love it even more when i put another gig of ram in it. thanks for the help in deciding

check the hardware rumors first!!!

Seems like 1 gig of ram is a good ceiling for the current gen...

$

just got yesterday at the apple store

pb 15" 1.67 HD edition 7200 rpm 100gig, 1 gig ram

lovin it!

Just sold my 12" Powerbook for close to what I paid for it in July :) and I'm about to order a new 15.2" model. The Higher res screen is the real draw here.

A couple of questions, how much noticbly larger is the 15.2 version? My cousin just got a Dell Inspiron 6000 15.4 and its almost twice the size of the 12" Powerbook

I'm hoping the 15.2 will still be portable.

Also is it worth upgrading the HD to either the 120gb-5400rpm or 100gb 7200rpm.

I'll be hooking the powerbook up to my Lacie 200gb Tripple interface (firewire 400/800 usb2) any way as final cut studio is one hefty program to load fully onto a laptop HD. And I would never capture DV to a laptop HD because its recommended you never capture to your startup drive as a rule of thumb.

Will the 7200rpm drive improve general performace or are we talking about such a small incremental difference that I may aswell save myself 200Euro and stick with the standard 80 option.

What do others think who have made this decision?

Also is the screen update that much different. Or are we still looking at a screen with a low refresh and dull matte look.

The Dell Inspiron my cousin got was only 1280x800 resolution (compared to apples new 1440x960) but its sharpness and viewing angle were so vastly superior to my 12"Powerbook (which cost more  )

Yes its worth it, and its only a few inches wider. 3.2 probably... haha.

5400 vs 7200 rpm, the drive will respond 33% faster for both read and write.

If you want it to be a good investment, drop in a gig of ram too.

keep your data on the external and the program on the interal drive for best results with video or audio, my personal fav.

Yeah. I'd be upgrading the memory regardless. I'll buy 1 gig piece now in the newyear maybe buy a second piece. I get it from www.macramdirect.com - good prices and worldwide shipping.

As you can see from my specs below, my powermac G5 isnt that much faster at booting up stuff like office 2004, freeway pro or corel painter IX than the 12" i just sold, it's kind of like real world experience doesn't realy compare to technical details like the 33% speed increase I should see.

I'm more over concerned about the screen, I loved my powerbook 12" for portability but the screen does suck, like a laptop from 6 years ago.

Are the new screen on the 15 & 17 like the Dells and Sony Vaios (tru bright) technologys?

the screen is not the 'tru brite'....

and thank god!

i personally prefer the matte finsh, as the glossy finish is terrible re reflections (imho).

that said, not only is it lovely they are matte, they are just plain lovely.

you guys aren't worried about the horizontal line issues?

you who have it, how is the new screen? many people are reporting flickering and horizontal lines. I'm getting the 15", but only if there are no issues with lines/flickering.

Yes I'm worried, but if I'm not satisfied with the quality of the goods and they are not fit for the purpose sold - in my case photoshop & painter IX, i'll send it back and get a refund, then order the 17. :D

I got the new PB (have had it about a week now I think?) and I gotta say there are NO screen problems whatsoever. No lines, no flickering. I've read that those who've experienced flickering did so because they updated their OS software and it flickered a bit afterwards but the flickering went away shortly after. Don't know if that's generally true but I've read that on here at least a couple of times. I agree with what others have said which is that you're going to get people on here complaining but that the majority have good machines.

good luck!
