I am devastated, no idea how I've got it!

Part of me is tempted to return it because it's within the 14 day returns period and rebuying a new one (delivery isn't until the end of October though!)

My other thought is to buy Apple care and make a claim for accidental damage.

Anyone else had a similar issue?!

I bought the ss graphite and am using the apple sport band . No scratches so far.

Also bought the Milanese, no way am I using that

Sounds like you've been very unlucky but these things happen. How bad is the scratch?

it's not terrible but enough to be noticeable!

Nope, just from regular use. The sapphire screens are EXTREMELY resistant to scratching but the aluminum watch screens all scratch fairly easily.

The Ion-X Glass doesn’t scratch easily from regular use and that is patently false information. Everybody would be seeing scratches on those screens if that was the case and I would have gotten one in 4+ years of daily use too. It all depends on whether the watch is abused and most people are aware they shouldn’t bask their watches into hard objects. Of course sapphire glass has harder properties but it’s also not available on aluminium watches at the standard price point.

I've just not found that to be the case unless people are being really careless with their watches.

My first three were all stainless steel, but the case in particular picks up micro-scratches (like all s/steel watches) which were annoying. I then switched to aluminium and have not noticed any difference in the robustness of the screen. I've worn all my watches 24*7 and for a variety of outdoor activities, so its not like I have them wrapped in cotton wool. Every time this subject comes up I see people saying buy the stainless steel, but I'm not convinced that's the answer, or that it necessarily makes good financial sense given how often we tend to replace these. I know some people prefer them aesthetically, so I'm not trying to argue against something subjective like taste, but I don't think its a magic bullet like its made out to be.

Just my 2¢.

I’d disagree, but to each his own. The SS yes picks up micro scratches, but they are easily removable with a polishing cloth.

My one experience with the aluminum is that the screen scratched and I never banged it against anything or even hit it. Everyone I know who has an aluminum watch has scratches on their screen (not deep but light surface scratches.). And the fact of the matter is that the sapphire glass on the SS and Edition models are much more scratch resistant to than the aluminum screens.

Here’s my 1 year old S5 with no scratches and worn daily.

My S2 had one very faint hairline scratch which was hardly visible and was worn daily for 3 years. It all depends on how you treat the watch. They don’t scratch easily with sensible daily use.

I second that. My 2yo S4 have 0 scratches and scuffs on the screen and body. Because I replace my watches every 2 years and the resell value is horrible, it’s not financially smart for me to buy the SS versions. I have no issues buying the aluminum cellular model.

One persons view of abuse is another persons view of normal daily wear. I take your point, and I agree, that the Ion X doesn't scratch easily from normal daily use. But over the course of multiple years of wearing Ion X watches, my S3 and S4 did develop a few minor scratches to the glass and I definitely don't feel I abuse my watches. Fortunately none ever quite as bad as the OP, and I feel for him.

@handsomelife I don't suppose it might just be a abrasion to the oleophobic coating? Or perhaps it's exaggerated by the fact you probably still have the oleophobic coating on the rest of the screen in which case they will become slightly less visible over time. Regardless I'm sorry about the scratches, that sucks to get them so soon.

@The-Real-Deal82 Nice to see a fellow LFC fan here, how good was Monday!

Anecdotally I have damaged all of my previous aluminum watches. Aluminum is rather soft so all it takes is one drop to the floor off the bathroom sink, or bang against a door frame as you're moving furniture in etc. (both of which are personal examples lol) whereas my stainless steel watch gets the same random bangs and dings and absorbs it much better.

I think the level of durability for the aluminum watches is on par with iphones, but take more abuse as its always on your wrist. Its the same materials. If you own an iphone 11 or any aluminum frame iphone you'd likely use a case and tempered glass screen protector if you wanted to keep it pristine.

That being said even my stainless steel watch has two microscratches on the crystal, but I know if it was an aluminum watch the damage would be worse.

Doesn't mean everyone should pay the ridiculously high premium for just a small bit of material difference though lol, I just prefer the look, feel, weight of the stainless steel in addition to the peace of mind of durability

I had a series 2 since launch and it had a lot of knocks against walls, metal door handles, and, recently really hard against a metal street lamp. It has one scratch on the top where the screen was hit hard against a metal door handle but only really noticeable if you examine it. In day to day use I never looked at the watch and noticed the scratch. I decided in Summer to upgrade to the next Apple Watch in stainless steel when it launched. I tried it on in store and didn’t like it so went for aluminium again, Series 6.

This makes sense to me. I wanted the stainless steel but preferred the aluminium when I tried the two on. If I was getting a Series 6 with the intention not to upgrade for quite a long time, I might have paid the higher price but....will probably get another in 2 to 3 years and don’t want to spend that much on a regular upgrade and the main reason was preferring the aluminium

I agree that the aluminum watches are very tough both the case and the screen. I have worn my original S0 watch as my "work watch" every day since new and there is one small scratch on the screen that I really have to look hard to find. I also have an aluminum S3 that I wear for part days many days a week and same for it. I just bought a stainless S4 so I am curious to see how well it holds up.

Sure, if you want to be totally dishonest and commit fraud. Chances are you’ll not be caught but it’s acts like this that bump up the costs for everyone.
Give me a break with the "totally dishonest and commit fraud" argument! Like some who play (likely legal) games with their taxes or exploit other loopholes unseen by the masses; if it is permissible under Apple's terms and conditions then let the customer exercise that option.

and I'm pretty sure it's not "acts like this that bump up the costs for everyone.", but more likely 1. GREED! and 2. Endless lawsuits brought by companies against Apple for just about anything and everything!

Scratches easily in what circumstances? If you’re bashing and dragging it down walls?
"Scratches easily" is a relative term. We are talking about a glass screen exposed to the outside elements and all that your wrist may contact. This is why I bought the Series 5 SBSS! 1. I plan on keeping it for a couple of years and 2. I have no worries about the screen OR the body getting scratched! I say pay the extra money and enjoy peace of mind!!
