I don’t know why people get so obsessed about scratches on watches to be honest. These devices are designed to be worn everyday and for a short period of time as they only last a few years. Wear them, use them and enjoy them. If you are the type of person that worries about the slightest bit of cosmetic damage, then pay twice as much for an AW with a sapphire display. I’d sooner put up with a few nicks that do that though as I don’t think £699 is reasonable for a smart watch, but that’s me.
Both the aluminium Apple Watches I have owned have escaped any scratches. I had a Series 2 for 3 years with perhaps one or two 2mm long hairline scratches that were only noticeable under very close inspection. My Series 5 is coming up to 2 years old now and no scratches at all. The aluminium watches are perfectly durable for everyday use unless you work or inhabit harsh environments.
That's my mind set as well. I know I am probably going to upgrade apple watches within two to three years, so I don't bother to spring for the more expensive models. The aluminum apple watches I have had have served me well. I wear my aluminum apple watch series 6 every day and it also has some small scratches on the screen. I just enjoy the watch and don't worry about it. Normal wear and tear is gonna happen. Just get apple care if the screen gets REALLY damaged and your are good.
