Hard drive AND my LCD screen replaced within 48 hours which was great turn around as the LCD screen wasn't in stock when I dropped my iMac off for repairs. Doing a Time Machine restore while looking at my beautiful new screen :)

Excellent service from staff and this was my first occasion in year and years of Apple ownership of having to have a product repaired (especially when 23 months out of warranty) and it was a painless and pleasant experience. Well done Apple :)

Anyone from Greece?

I 've got an email also. I live in Thessaloniki, Greece. Has anyone actually replaced for free his iMac's HD in Greece?

This is going to be fun hauling my 27 in imac into the mall. So anyone have a link to how I can wipe my HD before taking it in? I use time machine to back up with everything updated.

It is not hard to carry, you will not need your power cable, keyboard, etc. At least at my Apple store, there were lots of iMacs coming and going.

I received the same email and finally got around to calling Apple the other day. I told the tech that I and many others on the forums knew these drives were faulty and I figured I would just source one the day mine died and be back up and running the same day. Specifically because I could not afford the down time by taking the machine in and having them work on it a few days as this machine is used to produce CAD drawings daily in my small business.

I asked if they could send me a drive to have on hand for the dreaded day and I would handle the repair as I am capable of doing so. He told me they could not do that but offered to send a tech to my place to swap the drive for me. I asked how much and he said free! I said, deal!

I do not not have extended care so I have to say I am very impressed they are doing this for me. Especially since there is an apple store an hour away. They let me pick the day and a time window (morning or afternoon) so I picked this upcoming Friday as I usually just do clean-up work and field calls on Fridays. The tech did say that I would be responsible for backing up and restoring to the new drive which is not a problem.

YMMV, I think I just got lucky?

Has anyone taken theirs in lately? Mine is eligible, but I live an hour from 2 Apple Stores (Kansas City). Both said 5-7 day turn-around. Anyone been told this and then got it done much more quickly?

You might want to wait a while. I took mine in on Wednesday at 11:45 and picked it up at 2:30. The Genius thanked me for waiting and said they were taking 5-7 days when the recall was first announced. They are expecting two more rushes -- end of year (school breaks) and end of of recall offer.

Thanks for the insight. We've been waiting for the wife to finish her online Master's which will happen tomorrow, but I didn't want to wait until the unit fails.

I guess it depends on how many iMacs are coming through the store. Here in Brea CA, it took about 4 days I believe and it was ready to go.

I am disappointed as I was told I was getting a Western Digital, but unfortunately they gave me another Seagate. Hopefully they got it right this time with no bad sectors.

So I took the iMac in the mall today to the Apple store for my appointment. So it seems theres a high demand for this replacement and hard drives are coming in daily so I was put on a list in which Apple would call me when they are ready to take my machine in for repair. I thought that sucked, now I have wait another week or so to be called than another few days for the repair... I just figured apple would have all this in stock and ready by now (Been a month since they extended it) Has this happen to anyone?

I guess I just have to wait, nothing comes free! :D

The Genius that handled mine said that the replacement program was being paid by Seagate, so it would be very unlikely to get a WD drive out of the deal.

Has anyone got apple to fit an ssd in place of the hdd and put the replacement hdd as a second drive?

Been looking at getting an ssd anyways so tempted to buy and get them to fit it since i have imac thats part of the replacement program.

HELP Apple replaced the HHD and now my passwords aren't recognised

I also received the email to warn me that the hard drive on my 1TB 21.5" iMac was vulnerable to high failure rates and that I should have it replaced free of charge at my local Apple store.

So far the experience has been awful and now it's turning into a nightmare. It took me 2 weeks before I was able to reserve a Genius Bar slot at my local store, there were few options of time slot. Having called the store beforehand, i was told the procedure would take 48hrs, when I got to the Genius bar the extremely fed-up and arrogant attendant said that it would take up to 10days!! He did inform me that I could get a replacement machine in the interim if I wanted to fork out an annual fee of £340 to become a joint venture partner!!

I got my computer back yesterday (4 day turnaround) and did as I was instructed, followed the screen's instructions to back up from time machine. I did this (It took 3hrs) and now I cannot access any of my data on any of the 4 account profiles because it doesn't recognise my passwords! It is asking for a "master password" and is not accepting my "Administrators password"

HELP, this HHD replacement programme is turning into a nightmare for me :(
How do I access my data?

Banana Trick!!!

Now, I know I'm a newbie to all this forum activity and I reckon you are taking advantage of that. How is a banana going to solve my problems?

I took mine in on Saturday to get the hard drive replaced. They said it would take a day. They called me Monday and told me that they ordered a new LCD and that its all covered and will be ready by Friday. Awesome. Nothing like having a practically new computer with little inconvenience. Obviously my experience isn't over yet, but barring any hangups I am extremely happy with this "transaction"!

3 of our 6 27" iMacs needed the new drive. Took then all in on Thursday afternoon, got them all back the following morning. Time machine restore, job done. Painless.
