But what is the difference between activating it and just putting an old cut up SIM in. Couldn't the old SIM activate the phone so you can use it with that SIM? Thats how it was on the 3G & 3GS

I received my 4, followed the instructions to activate, and Premier says it's successful.

My 4 disagrees, however, as it still hasn't received the omzactivationbrainwaves.

I'm upgrading from a 3G.

Exactly. That's why I am confused.

1. What is a cut sim card? And how do I go about doing that

2. You mean to tell me that after I got an email from att saying that if I intend to activate to another phone number (no the one the phone was ordered for) I am screwed?

Can att do ANYTHING right? So now what?

The new iphone uses a much smaller sim card than the older ones. Luckily, as far as we know the only thing changed with the sim cards is the obvious size. As far as we know, they both use the same interface, therefore one SHOULD be compatible with the phones using the other.

So what some people are doing is taking scissors and cutting down their old sim card to fit into the new iphone. If you won't use the old big sim atleast for the time being, its worth a shot. Just cut it conservatively, the last thing you want to do is cut off too much, just enough to where it would fit in the new iphone. Worse case, if you needer the larger size back either you can buy an adapter on ebay for usually between $5-$10. I'm a bit liberal with these types of things, so I would try it, but its up to you.

Can someone help me? I felt this didn't need a new thread.

Well I just got my 2 iphones, one is my moms.
I plugged mine in and it lets me play with it, says No service and in settings>phone says waiting for activation.
I don't think it's doing anything, when I plug it into iTunes it just asks me if I want to sync (Which I've tried but doesn't activate it)
My moms phone activated and had signal in two minutes....

cut sim card

if i cut the sim card from my 3gs and put it in the iphone 4 will i still have to activate it through itunes or will it be active once i put it in?

Was this ever resolved? I'm receiving a phone today that I plan on hooking up to my fiance's line, but it was ordered to another account.

It should activate in iTunes. iTunes just looks for an AT&T SIM to be installed in the phone.

I had a 3GS and when I ordered the iPhone 4, I added a new line. However, I wanted to use the iPhone 4 as my new phone (it was already activated on the new line)

Planning in advance, I did the following:

1) Ordered micro-sim card from AT&T online. The only one they have available to purchase is for the iPad...but it is just a standard micro-sim card. They state it is for the IPad, but like I said there is no difference between it and the micro-sim for the iPhone 4. As long as it hasn't been activated on an iPad, you are fine.

2) Got a replacement "standard" sim from my local AT&T store for the 3GS

After I got my iPhone 4, I contacted AT&T. After they verified the phone number I wanted to use the new micro-sim with, they had me read off the numbers on the front of the micro-sim card and within 2 minutes it was ready.

I placed it in the iPhone 4 and it was ready to go with my original/old number. We just repeated the process for the 3GS. I gave them the number off the front of the "standard" sim card and my old iPhone 3GS was activated with the new line's number.

So now, the old 3GS with the new number will go to my mom and I get the iPhone 4 with my old number.

Hope the above makes sense, and is helpful!!
