I got my cube with all the original stuff + upgraded hard drive, apple cinema display, speakers, keyboard, and mouse for $150. I recently saw one on SF bay area craigslist for $50.

Addressing your question as to whether or not you would be able to get some years out of this:

I got my 12" powerbook 1.33 when I was 7. That was in 2002. I'm about to enter my senior year of high school and I still use it. It really depends on what you intend to do. Put on Leopard, since there is much more support. If you intend to use iTunes, browse the web, email, microsoft office, and do the occasional photoshop work then the G5 is a fine machine. However, you're stuck with CS4 I believe...

Even still, CS4 is a great set of programs.
Thanks; I have CS5 on my Mini hooked up to the Thunderbolt Display as well as CS4 on my G5.

Long live the PPC:apple:

Congrats on the purchase, PM G5's are great machines. ESP if you have a nice vid card in one and stack it up with some ram. Love mine. : D

Yeah true, the desk wouldn't take the weight of the G5 :(

Build (or buy) a small platform for it. I just made one for my G5 after moving it off my desk to make more space. My platform has wheels so I can easily moved for vacuuming the floor weekly.

The wheels are from an old office chair that broke, painted the wood silver to better match the G5.

ETA - my G5 is the 2.0Ghz DP early 2005, the model just before the dual core G5. I love it but can't wait for my new iMac later this year. I'll still hang onto the G5 for older software compatibility.

Nce. Ever since I got my Powermac G5; I just feel like my Mac Mini and Macbook Pro aren't real Macs. I guess it's the nostalgia of PowerPC.

For me I think it's the appreciation of good engineering (i'm like that with my cars too..) all apples are well engineered (honestly I love my MBP) but the PM G5 epitomises this more than most, for me at least - it's a thing of beauty and superb engineering from the outside to the very inside. I think for me this is the enjoyment of using it as my main machine over my laptop macs. :) Enjoy the PM, it's also fun investigating ways to keep it current and useful.

Yeah, I did buy it for the case but I'm running Photoshop CS4 on the PowerMac G5 with no problems. :) It's a lovely built machine and I couldn't care less if it's obsolete. :)

Should I upload two more photos of my Powermac? :)
