Sir,

Here is my personal thought on this. You have played right into their hands. Restocking fee....really? I mean what company is so cheap that they punish you if you don't like the product?

I have been buying electronics for years and not once have I had a company penalize me for returning a product no matter what the reason.

The reason for the restocking fee is the discourage you from returning the product. They're saying that it costs them to repackage it all, so you should pay for that for not knowing what you want, but this simply isn't true.

You have a right as a consumer to change your mind. You have the right to decide the product isn't for you. It's Mapples cost of doing business to eat that cost to make you happy.

With that said...I would call Mapple, and explain you've changed your mind, and that you would like to return the product without a restock fee. Explain that not only do you think it's ridiculous to charge that fee, but that you're looking at getting a desktop instead.

If they insist on charging you the fee, then politely tell them that you will not be buying anything from them again as you like to have the confidence as a customer that you're not going to be penalized for changing your mind.

Go ahead and buy your desktop anyway if you want some other time, but make sure they know as a company that this is crap. Basically make them seem like they can make 10% of the cost and lose a customer, or they can wave the cost and keep you a happy warrior in the Mapple army :D

This is a forum... and yes life is too short... but I whole-heartedly disagree with the majority of what you said. And I'm not trying to be rude here... but changing your mind is one thing.... but what you are condoning is a "try before you buy" mentality... which is one of the reasons companies have restocking fees. Legally a company cannot re-sell that system as new and will likely take a larger hit reselling it as used/refurbished. Companies have to pay departments to handle the call, take the return order, pay for a place to store the unwanted system, pay the people to handle the return, also re-inspect, format and test and re-package. 10% is Cheap for a restocking fee when compared to others.... and as a customer that gives me "confidence" that people aren't getting away with buying new and then trying to stick it to the company because they made a poor decision. Just my three cents.

Well,
Still no luck. I said I wanted to exchange it, and the guy was pretty calm, but not seeming to budge. I might call back one more time, but even though I can understand the restock fee... it just kind of sucks.

does the peeps of this forum think it's possible to get 1600 on CL for the thing ? (In portland, or?)

i may just try that...

people are on craigslist are looking for a good deal. I don't think you'll get much more than -10% of what you paid.

no reason not to try though. give it a shot. How many days do you have until you can return it? also make sure you take the necessary precautions when dealing with people on Craigslist. lots of whackos out there

Those are some of the biggest retail chains in Canada. ALL of them have a no hassle return policy on laptops and NO restocking fee. This applies both online and in store.

Maybe this is an American thing, but here in Canada it's very rare to have a company charge you a restocking fee. I have never had to pay one in my entire life.

the OP might have a legitimate excuse why he wants to return it. But why didn't he/she think of his/her needs PRIOR to forking over the money for a MBP?

For the same reason thousands of people return products. A lot of times you don't know if they'll work for you until you try them out. A lot of times no matter how much research you put in you realize that the real world doesn't work with what you thought it would.

Seriously, none of you have ever purchased something that didn't work like you had hoped?

Not only that, but I'm seriously flabbergasted that you people defend this kind of practice. You're seriously sitting here arguing with me that well should be taught a lesson for a product not working for us. You're trying to convince me that huge companies are losing so much money because everyone is a film maker and is borrowing electronics for the weekend.

Wow...you guys live in one paranoid world.

Hmm, perhaps and if that's the case...I'm sorry to hear it.

None of the Canadian sites I found charge stuff. Maybe you guys should be ordering from Canada....probably be cheaper anyway. :)

What the heck is the "mapple"? Is this some store in canada?

"Mapple" is this guy's way of criticizing Apple while he continues to shell out money to the company. This kid comes out of the woodwork with his crazy opinions, to which he is fully entitled to have, and expects everyone to drink his kool-aid.

OP: Bottom line is you can probably explain your way out of the restocking fee. I don't usually pay them myself but I do think long and hard before I make a major purchase.

Heck you got a great laptop with the MBP. I can understand that not having a desktop is kind of an inconvence but the cool thing is the MBP is just as good as a desktop. The only thing it really lacks is storage and bigger screen size. I plan on getting an iMac or Mac Pro later on this year to actually physically replace my PC tower sitting right here. The MBP I have is great and will be using it everywhere I go. I want to take comfort in knowing that when I get the PC tower replaced that I will have got something that totally crushes it in performance, and it will be much quieter too!!! :apple:
