It went like this: My wife and I have family share on with her appleid account as the "organizer". We also share a credit card account (same card #, we each carry a physical card in our wallet w/ that # but each our own name printed on it, which we use for everything). That card # was part of a breach, so the credit card issuer sent us two new cards. The numbers changed, but they both match.
I went into her appleid via appleid.apple.com to change the card to the new #. It worked! But: then I tried, on my phone, to set up my applepay with my new card. It needed my to verify the security code of my OLD # (which was uneditable on that screen!!)! So, I log into appleid.apple.com for MY appleid account and I see I have two payment methods: one is the family one which now has the correct card#. The other is my "second payment method", which has the old #. I try changing it there to the new one but it complains that it can't verify! I try killing off (blanking out) my "second payment method" (because why do i NEED a second method??? The family card is fine w/ me..) but it won't let me. Why? I feel like I'm out of options.
And please please don't tell me I need to go apply for a second card with another issuer JUST to make my phone work right.
