GPS and Google maps Question

Does the GPS allow for data transfer to allow map overlay in "Hybrid" or "Satellite" view in an area with wifi, edge, or 3g not available. I was in the middle of nowhere in "Oregon National Forest" and was following the "blue dot" along marked forest roads in hybrid view. Where was the map data coming from? I have looked at these areas at home using my wifi. Will the iPhone cache this data

Sometimes its cached so that would probably be why it would do it.

Did it say "No Service" in the corner? If not, it was probably still downloading a bit of data (albeit slowly).

it said "no service" The data was actually streaming quite fast for even a 1 bar or so service.

Hm, ya I guess you had some cache left over.
