iPhone 7/Plus GPS off after using other app on CarPlay

I’m not sure if this is an iOS 13 issue or a CarPlay issue as we got a new car around the same time as ios13 came out but when I’m using CarPlay, if I’m getting directions and do something else (make a call, change audio books, etc) the maps app will lose where it’s at and then recalculate the route but it’s off a good distance from where I actually am at. It’s happened multiple times over several days so I’m sure it’s not a glitch at this point. Has anyone seem this and have suggestions in how to fix it? I hadn’t seen this issue prior to the new car and iOS 13 combination.
