I am trying to leave my iPhone in the GYM locker while I connect my Watch with the airpods to start streaming during the workout without having the phone around. Would the Watch be able to connect from a very far range with my iPhone? and if I decide to stream the music with the GPS version, would it be able to use my phone data from this range?

Even for more extreme cases, I would like to leave my phone at home (connected to wifi) while I bring only my watch and airpods to the gym and still stream online music. If that is possible, then it is a no brainer that I might have to get the Watch after all.

Or does that require me spending extra 70 bucks for the cellular version? Anyone?

I would most likely use it to college and during workouts. I don't know if it could be very useful if I wanna stay away from my phone in the GYM and just access bluetooth earphone with just the Watch. Is the Watch capable of connecting to the Airpods and allow me to switch between music without my phone around?

I might also need it for GPS while driving. Not looking at my phone for directions would be nice.

Thoughts? Would the extra 70 bucks worth it?
Yes just put your air pods in and will be able to use it with just your watch.

It's worth the money for me personally.

The GPS only version likely would not be able to use the phone data from a far distance, you would be limited to the music saved on your watch. Your second use case would definitely require the cellular version.

I guess I should edit this to say if your phone and watch connect to wifi at the gym then it should allow you to stream the music as long as the watch is connected to wifi.

have a s3 no-LTE
just tried it with my phone in airplane mode,
so only wifi on the watch, and apple music streamed just fine

you gym would have to have wifi, and no log-in page on that wifi
password is fine (you would have had to join on your phone at some point),
but no page that you have to click "accept terms" on or something like that.

I just purchased the wifi version of the S3. Upon reflection, I think the carriers are going to be forced to reevaluate their current Apple Watch pricing. I think we will see lower pricing very soon. And if I am right, I wouldn't mind taking advantage of a price cheaper than $10.00, especially when I have the unlimited data plan. I think I may return the wifi version tomorrow and get the cellular. If my guess doesn't come to fruition in the short term, it's not that big a deal. I just won't turn on cellular at the current price.

People need to start letting the reps on social media know that they aren't happy with the current pricing but would consider getting service at a cheaper price.

I returned the GPS watch to the Apple store this evening, and purchased the cellular version. Once I activated cellular with Verizon, I got a on-screen message that I would get 3 months free and no activation fee.

Edited to add: According to the Verizon website, the phone must be purchased from Verizon. Odd that the promotion was given to me on the website. I will take it. :)

Yea all 4 carriers in the US say the same thing in ads and from the reps but as you found it works for anyone. Currently the latest date for this offer is listed for 12/31/17.

You can also purchase from any of the other retail sellers like Target, Wallmart and Bestbuy. I expect it to be extended but we never know for sure until it is announced.

Thanks for the confirmation, Dave. I had begged on Twitter earlier before activation and they wouldn't budge. Decided to go ahead and activate and saw that I was still given the deal. What is weird is that the phone is listed as paying month to month, even though I purchased from Apple. It also shows it as eligible for an upgrade. Wonder if it is just new activation screw up listing wise that they will fix in the next day or so, or something I will have to call them about.
