If I hold out and get the iPad 3G but do not start up the 3G subscription from AT&T, will I still get some sort of GPS? Obviously, not the assisted GPS but what about just reg GPS?

    In a house...duh!
You can probably use apps that use location...maybe....but atleast on the iPhone the Google Maps application requires internet to load maps. A 3rd party App like Navigon should work though.....interesting!

The iPhone 3G works with GPS when there is no simcard installed - the only time GPS does not work is when airplane mode is turned on.

I am so torn between getting the wifi only or 3G. During the keynote Steve was showing how great the maps were but we don't know if he was using the wifi or 3G version do we?

I think he was using the wifi version because his didn't have the extra black plastic portion along the top. And I don't THINK there were any signal bars or AT&T in the status bar. Also, maps still work with the wifi version, but instead you get the wifi location technology instead of the GPS. Of course, this is useless while on the road since you won't get map data.

Personally, I'm getting the wifi version. I have an iPhone with a data plan that provides maps, and suffices for the little surfing I need to do while away from a wifi hotspot. Now to decide on the size...

At least I have an extra month to decide!

Joikuspot on my N900 works great. Who needs a 3G iPad. Oh did I mention unlimited Skype calling over 3G and a terrific webbrowsing experience? :D
