Try this: go here and download the HD .MP4 (1280x710) version of the video. Then do a conversion using the AppleTV 2 preset. You might want to also run it using the AppleTV 3 preset if you want a longer run. I'd appreciate if you could do this before tomorrow.

No prob.

For the AppleTV 2 preset (ATV 3 wasn't much longer):

[20:26:43] work: average encoding speed for job is 66.110367 fps

CPU settled at 3.66GHz, 88C and 59W according to Intel Power Gadget. (Fan stayed at 1200)

Thank you so very much! You're a real champ.

Results here were 78.56 fps encode speed, 3.8 to 3.9 GHz CPU, 75 to 78 watts, 96 to 98 C temperature, and 2700 fps fan. There'd be almost difference except for hyperthreading. Quiet operation seems a good tradeoff for such a small difference in performance.

Cool benchmarks. Interestingly though. the author of these returned the iMac (http://macperformanceguide.com/blog/2014/20141103_2226-iMac-goes-back.html).
Very interesting, but I'm not surprised he sent it back.

I'll probably still send Handbrake jobs to the old Sandy Bridge i5 setup out of habit, but it is quite a novelty to have them silently running in the background.

With Broadwell and beyond I suppose that will be completely normal.

I hope I can help clear this up some more with some screen shots.

iMac as per signature, m295x.

Running drivers I downloaded this week from AMD website (14.20.1002.1002-140716a-174376C.)

I've just had another hour of playing bf4 on 3840 × 2160 at ultra settings.

Measured GPU before and after and before was 59 degrees after was around 84 degrees.

Screen shots as promised. http://imgur.com/a/sJQc2

How did you install new drivers on your iMac? I was on the site on the weekend looking for drivers for the M290x and could not locate any.

I've gone and done another couple of before and after screenshots of GPU temperatures.

This time before and after 20 mins of Crysis 3 at settings which are too high. (fps in the 20's)

Unsurprisingly it does push a lot harder than BF4.

100% fans and 104 degrees gpu. CPU is doing practically nothing and has scaled right back. (as it's supposed to to save power.)

To put the fans in perspective, I measured them at 33db. I speak at around 60db and the current background noise is around 26db.

I think a bit more noise would be acceptable to try and lower the gpu temp a bit. Especially in gaming.

Apologies - thought you were referring to Mac drivers not Windows drivers.

Yes. I had thought the screen shots from in Windows might have given that away. ;)

The fact that the i5 peaks out at 86C under the same load (and somewhat less throughput due to lack of HT) without bumping the fan past its default of 1200 RPM is a useful distinction.

I'm really starting to look into a i5 m290 combo. Maybe paranoid but thats a lot of extra of heat being generated.
