Hey all!

I’ve been looking at what PCIe video cards will work best in my late-05 G5. I had a lot of success flashing an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 but found some of the performance for gaming lacking. Not surprising, since it was definitely a card oriented toward technical work rather than gaming.

I am curious if anyone has ready information on the GPUs which are compatible with MacOS on the G5. I know Linux/BSD is basically an open question since the slots are PCIe, but for this I’m really focused on MacOS first.

I recently sold my Quadro for a great price (considering I got it from Goodwill for $30) and would like to look at getting something else, possibly an ATI card as I’ve heard they are better for retro gaming.

Appreciate any thoughts yall have. I didn’t see this topic discussed elsewhere but it would seem to be of some importance for the late-05 G5 collectors.

There's a handful of options really for PowerPC Mac OS X. Such a shame given the power of the hardware.

OEM Cards:
NVIDIA GeForce 6600/LE
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT
NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500

Retail Cards:
ATI Radeon X1900 GT

Flashed Cards:
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX (flash with Quadro ROM)
ATI Radeon X1900 XT (flash with X1900 ROM)
ATI Radeon X1950 XT (flash with X1900 ROM)

If you find the exact OEM or retail cards you can flash a new ROM onto those too to turn them into Mac cards.

Any sense on the relative power or effectiveness of these cards?
