I tried the firefox 3.x add ons and all they capture is the thumbnails from a website and not the fullsize pics. Anyone know of any software *that works* to do this simple task??

I prefer the inbuilt safari mechanism.... open the web page and press command+opt+A! Scan the webpage in this activity window for files ending in .png, .jpg, .gif etc! Now double click the file you want and it'll open it for you in a new window or you can simply select the file, copy it and paste it in the downloads window!

    Paparazzi!

Edit: I'm guessing you want pics from inside the web page, not the actual webpage itself.

Try Firefox's Downthemall or Flashgot addons.

I think firefox etc. does download the whole image you selected because you might have selected the thumbnail and not the big image.
