I am sure the next Microsoft store opening will have the same if not larger crowd!!

;)

Oh yeah I'm sure. I can't tell you how many times I've visited the Microsoft store near my house only to find it packed...oh wait; I can. Zero.

Do they still even have stores? Still line dance? I have never gone to one and do not even know where the closest one to me is.!

Steve Ballmer will turn all of that around soon. He's a wizard at knowing what people want, right?

/sarcasm

This is what MS wants so bad. Yet when given the choice and some money, people won't go their store or buy their POS. So the only way to get people to show up is give away tickets, money, whatever. Thats how MS rolls. :p

Oh dear. Angst.

I don't think many people on this forum have ever been to Grand Central Terminal. It is awe inspiring just to be inside the building apple store or not.

The super high cieling, the giant expanse, the marble and granite, the people coming and going. It's one of New York, scratch that, America's best public landmarks.

Standing up on that balcony is probably a pretty cool experience.

Plus you get a free t shirt :)

Cool! I am always glad to see Apple create lines for events, whether it is for purchasing a new product or for a new store opening. Apple fans are the greatest.

You actually differentiate between the two? I and most ppl I know just say Grand Central.

Unsaid but a given. I tell friends I'll meet them at Grand Central. But if someone refers to the terminal as Grand Central Station, you know they don't get out much ;).

OMG. It looks like a pilgrimage to a freaking shrine. These lemmings are going too far out of their way for a free T-Shirt (or worse yet - just to step inside an Apple store).

Some times this mac culture I'm a part of is just downright embarrassing. :(

probably not

You got that right, will be great at product launches, need to get to work, or home from work, it's busy enough there, on top of it they have to get around this? I am wondering if the MTA really thought it through all the way

The MTA are so hurting for money they probably did not think the congestion through (which i still can't understand when they had a winfall surplus 4-5 years ago). I feel awful for the commuters. Hopefully it won't be this packed at peak times.

I will definitely try to check this store out on a weekday after the holdiays. The only NYC Apple store I like is 5th Avenue (regarding layout, some staff etc.).

I've been through many, many times (and maybe more if my trains get rerouted to the future LIRR hub there). It's a very beautiful building without the Apple Store. And to me, the coolest thing I ever saw in GCT was a movie prop of the Ark from Raiders in some great exhibit there. Don't think the Apple store in GCT will top that for me :)

give me a break

going to a busy train station to visit a store that has, what, 3 or four other locations in the city is idiotic. i don't care what product they are selling. purely idiotic.

is it really that cool to have a t-shirt that says you bought a computer at a train station the first day it was possible?

You say Mecca, I say Apple. Potato, pototo.

Frankly, making fun of people going to an Apple store opening is way sadder than going to an Apple store opening.

I don't consider that crowd in Grand Central surprising, but my god that's a lot of Apple employees!

Apple really is a cult.

Why isn't it acceptable to be an Apple fan? And i am serious... people all around the world are "worshipping" all kinds of stuff including singers, bands, people who chase for a ball, figures that are supposedly exist many years ago... And i say, why not?
All everyone wants is to feel good, and a lot of people find different ways to do it. Some go to a Lady Gaga concert, some to "Insert an artists here" concert, some do this some that and some find an opening of an Apple store a good experience.

I don't get it, but then again I'm a tad older than that crowd.

What's in that particular store that you can't see, experience or buy at any other Apple Store? It must simply be about the "being there" experience.

For the younger kids in the crowd i'll keep it PG13.
You can read as many books as you like about copulation, but until you actually copulate, you have no idea what the experience is like.

Experiencing an Apple Store opening vicariously through a macrumors posting doesn't do it justice, like watching a DVD recording of your favorite bands concert. You need to be there to really understand.

Yes, crowds at concerts are hellish, yes there are crazy band fans, but darn it - the experience was worth it.

Just my $0.02

This is kind of sad. I'm a big Apple fan. I get excited about new products, and I waited in line for multiple hours for the iPhone 4, but a store opening? Really? At least with the iPhone, there was a limited supply, and there was a reason to stand in line. I walked away with a new gadget.

Come back in two days and you can check out the entire store at a leisurely pace, without a bunch of neck beards cluttering up the place.

Some people are a little scary.

It would be interesting to know what % of the crowd own Apple products vs. non apple users. That's a statistic I would pay to know.
