I was in NY on Thanksgiving and visited the Apple Store on Black Friday. There was a small line to walk down the staris/get inside, but there was pretty much no space to move around once we got in. It smelled bad too.

I could understand doing this in a city that had no Apple stores and finally got one; but doing this in NYC is crazy. Those folks must enjoy being in crowds a little too much (which, I guess, is a necessity in order to live in Manhattan.)

You Are

going to a busy train station to visit a store that has, what, 3 or four other locations in the city is idiotic. i don't care what product they are selling. purely idiotic.

is it really that cool to have a t-shirt that says you bought a computer at a train station the first day it was possible?

Absolutely WHINER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it's simple guys: the best location for a store is in an area with A LOT of people traffic. $$$ is the only goal here

Looks like a miserable experience, i love apple, but i would not show up to this.. apple stores are busy enough on any normal day when you need to buy something, i don't get the big deal, its not like its the first store in NYC theres other stores if you need to go buy something, and its not like theres any new products on sale at this specific store. so why the crowd? Are all these people showing up for a free t shirt? if thats the case ...wow

No pleasures in being in crowds that are excited and glad to be together? Gee, I guess you don't go to sports or the theater or anything.

Well the t-shirts are already on eBay going for $70. Thanks but no thanks to MacRumors which clued me in late thus that when I went to Grand Central from my office three blocks away at about 12:30PM the t-shirts were already gone.

I sometimes wish my life were so void of purpose that I had the time to loiter outside a store for hours with no purpose but to waste time. Meh, oh well, back to work.:(

Or so void of purpose that you download the Apple commercials that most of the world skips (love the TiVo +30 button...).

Nope! I hate crowds, i go to sports occasionally but hate crowds, who likes being in a crowd? oh and ***** the theater lol! I stand by my point going to this seems retarded to me.

Very few things in life are really "Free"... Time is money, if you spent hours or however much time in line for a "Free" shirt.. that shirt wasn't really free, you just spent your time to get it, then you sell it on ebay for $$ to get paid for the time you spent to get the shirt, so someone who doesnt have the time to spend to wait in line to get the shirt can buy it conveniently in exchange for the time you invested to get the shirt! you get it??

It is GRAND CENTRAL

You really have to appreciate the grandeur of Grand Central as well as the history to fully appreciate the new Apple Store. That Apple built this and still retained the look of Grand Central is wonderful. Opening days aside, I'm sure this will be a huge success and a really nice place to visit and browse.

pfff - ordering online or from Grand Central is the same for me...

What's a 'Microsoft store'? ;)

You know, the same guys that invested a few hundred million in Apple when they were in the toilet years ago ??

I dont see the blood-sucking, milk all their customers for every penny Apple, invest in Microsoft in the near future, do you ?

The title of this thread should read "New farm opened in Grand Central Terminus. Thousands of dumb sheep attended, asking to be slaughtered."

And no free concert tickets!... How about that Mr. Ballmer? (duck to avoid flying chair)... :D

Sorry, but I've ordered online and I attended the Grand Opening of Apple's very first store on the East Coast (3 hours away), the grand opening of their Richmond, VA store (getting closer, 1 1/2 hour away) and the grand opening of their Norfolk, VA store (20 minutes away - Finally, one at home), but I enjoyed the experience of all three!

Especially on the Grand Opening Day, it's all about the experience... Of which I never got ordering online.

This was a part of a settlement between the companies. It seems that Microsoft had included Quicktime code in Windows without the right to do so. If Apple had been in a position to press the issue, Microsoft would probably have had to give them a lot more than $150M.

Why would they? Apple hasn't stolen any of Microsoft's code. Besides, Microsoft stock has been flat for a decade. Apple would be better off buying back their own shares.

Google finance, AAPL vs. MSFT

Too bad Microsoft didn't hold on to that stock, it would be worth billions today. :D

wtf why would people actually line up to go into that apple store? it sells the same exact stuff as all the other apple stores.

You still buy into that old myth? That was a settlement, nothing more. Apple still had a few billion in the bank at that point; the $150 million wasn't about "saving" them, and it wasn't done out of charity, considering MS makes quite a decent profit selling Office for Macs. Besides, MS sold all the stock they bought some time later for a reasonable profit (should have held onto it longer though).

free t-shirt

all that for a t-shirt? And I thought we were having a crisis over here in Europe...

Make that $120-200.

Ouch and my boss was out yesterday. Should've gone there at 10AM. Would've made a nice X-mas gift.

I live in Northern VA and can remember going to the first Apple store in Tyson's Corner not long after it opened. The store was almost empty. Only people that had a Mac were there. Some people were there to quench their curiosity about Apple products but that store and others that opened later were almost ghost towns. I remember wondering how much money they must be losing on those stores then. It was obvious that Apple had little market share. To see how their stores have changed in just maybe 5 years is stunning. So, for us old timers that remember when, going to such a grand opening would be an interesting experience. And to some of us, just milling around taking in the atmosphere, talking to other similarly minded idiots is enjoyable.

You are lying! I live in Northern Virginia and that store has never stopped being busy. Any given day that store is almost too crowded.

Oh I've been to Grand Central and don't get me wrong it is well….grand…lol
But i am not waiting in line to see how wonderful it looks when A) I can go to any apple store or order online if I need the products and B) I can see clearly how wonderful it is in all these pictures and videos, it doesn't seem worth it at least to me…
Now don't get me wrong I am not disputing, it looks a great flagship store, its huge, looks very "grand central", blends in well, fantastic…I am simply stating waiting in line, not even for a product launch!!! But for a store opening in an area where there's plenty of other stores, i could understand if it was in a starved market with a huge demand for an apple store but for somewhere with so many stores… simply baffling to me!

If i was passing and there was no line, sure I may wonder in to take a peak but that crowd and line is simply not worth the time to me. I'm sure it will be super successful which is great. But until apple builds a skyscraper with an apple store on top with amazing views of all the city or puts on on top of the empire state or something, I'll be sitting these store opening madness out lol!

don't know if it's because of the new set up or if it's because of lighter saturday morning traffic, but i was impressed with the Genius Bar at the new store.

went to get my iPhone serviced this morning at 10:30, walked into the genius bar section and was immediately greeted at the door to be checked in. as soon as i checked in, a genius was immediately available to help me. no waiting at all. at other stores, usually after i check in, i would have to wait a good 10-15 minutes but service was outstanding this morning. And it seems now the service area has expanded from just the bar to the entire room, which makes the customer service a bit more personal.

thumbs up!
