A mini would beat the crap out of the G5. Considering they are cheaper than what a lot of G5's sell for, theyre a much better buy.

I beg to differ; a G5 2.0 DP with 6-8 GB RAM and decent HDDs is about as fast as an MBP, depending on the application, in my experience.

Im a web/graphic designer aswell, YOU DO NOT need a Mac Pro, its a waste of money, I would recommend you get an iMac, remember that Photoshop & Illustrator are memory intensive, doesn't really require an amazing processor. I would get 4GB memory. That should do you well, if you do a lot of 3d renders then you might want to get a PC imo with Quad Core..

My thoughts.. Im actually getting an iMac for the same reason, but I only mostly use photoshop & dreamweaver.

Anyway if your eMac has been doing well for you then imo the iMac should be more then enough.

Very much so. I bought a 20in iMac and then a PVA 24in LCD to plug into it. (the cheap imac screen is for tools/browser/mail etc) and it has served me well so far. The MacPro is geared for 3D/HD Video editing which actually use all 8 of those cores effectively right now and cost 2x the money ($2799+$50 airport card+$190-$300 for ram) and ask yourself what you could do with that extra $1200? (Wacom tablet, plug-ins, fonts, stock photos, office equipment)

If you really need 8+ GB of ram it's your only choice but if you don't then the MP is very much overkill.

The best option for you is to get a white 20" Intel iMac. Those have MUCH better screens than current alum models and are way faster than 2.0 or even 2.3 GHz G5's.

And.. forget about using a TV for design -_-

Agreed; a very nice machine. Stupid easy to upgrade (with cheap) RAM too so no excuses for not maxing it out.

YOU may not need one - but many others do. It's not a waste of money, especially when I'm dealing with PSD file sizes that are a couple gigs in size, exporting, rendering, running Illustrator, InDesign and working with huge RAW files all at the same time. Then the Mac Pro is great value, especially in big agencies.

It saves a lot of time and helps getting proofs to clients in the best time possible. And it allows you to use a monitor which is better than the screen in the iMac.

But for the average graphic designer that doesn't do anything near as intensive or time critical, then an iMac is fine.

I'd rather have my 8 core machine crucnh through my renders thankyou very much :p

I would sell that TV but the misses uses it to watch TV when i'm on the PS3! :D Thats another reason why I wanted to use it for my mac monitor.

So I may have to get a monitor then... If I could get a 24" screen for around £120, and a 2 GHZ mac mini with 4GB ram and 320HD for £450 then I might just stretch to that, or I could just wait and hope the new mac mini comes out in March, and slug it out with the emac! :( Ideally I want a big screen, so the 20" imac is really not what I want. The 24" white imac or silver ones would be fine if only I could get them within my budget, but can't!

Does anyone know where I can get 2 x 2 GB ram for the current mac mini 2GHZ in the UK? Or is it just america that I can get it from?
