    I am a budding designer trapped in the body of an IT manager. I am thinking of what to buy myself for Christmas, and I would like some input as to this.

    I currently have a rev D 17" PowerBook, with a 23" Cinema Display. I was either going to get a newer 17" version, but would a better use of money be a 30" Cinema Display?

    Also, my partner, who runs a research publishing company, wanted to know what the average market rate would be to have someone:
    Design templates for the documents they publish in InDesign;
    Generate documents (this assumes that the designer would receive finalized Word and graphic files)

    The type of documents they produce are white papers, case studies, and research. They make pretty liberal use of charts and tables.

    They were still using Word to create these complex documents, and I created one of their shorter papers and created a layout. They liked it so much, they want to hire someone to do it professionally; but I have no idea how much designers charge, be it hourly, by page, or whatever.

    They are sold into the Adobe suite, since their final output will be PDF documents. They are also looking to make their PDFs more dynamic and interactive; their products lend themselves well to that.

    OK, now I'm outta breath.:) I'd appreciate anyone's feedback on either or both of my questions, either here or emailed to me directly.

    Thanks in advance!

    I don't see any problems with the computer setup you already have! I'd say spend your money on RAM and apps, or a desktop.

    An entry-level designer doing standard documents and such really won't make very much money at all. That's because for that type of work there are 1,000,000 designers and 100 jobs.
