I've recently come into the need to do some basic graphics editing (mostly with computer generated images like logos and text......not photos) and was wondering if GIMP is sufficient to do this kind of stuff? If not, what software (CS5 is out of the acceptable price range) would you guys recommend? Thanks for the help.

GIMP is free. My experience with it is very limited and is probably your best bet for kicking the tires on graphics editing without being out of pocket any $$$.

Another alternative is Pixelmator for $59USD. That's what I use to mess around and do simple editing, beyond what iPhoto is capable of.

Adobe Photoshop Elements is also a popular light weight, low-cost alternative to the standard Photoshop.

I think with any option you decide on, the most important part isn't what tool you use, but knowing how to use it. You could try GIMP, look up some tutorials, start doing things on your own and then decide on if you're even spending the time to need something more, and to what extent.
