I have been in commercial Printing for over 35 years and 20 of that has been in Desktop Publishing and Computer Graphics. I current use the UMAX Powerlook III both at home and at work however they are no longer in production. This is a link to the current UMAX scanner professional line: http://www.umax.com/scanners/index.jsp?cate=Scanners:+Professional+models
They are not priced to outrageous, and deliver a very high quality scan with good Dmax range (light to shadow density), and high resolution. The thing to avoid right now though in choosing a scanner is a SCSI connection, with the advent of OS 10.3 (Panther) SCSI interface was left behind. I have to use OS 9.2.2 at work for my scanner there and at home I still use OS 10.2.8 which works fine. Unless you want to spend thousands for a drum scanner ($40k to over $100k) in my opinion the UMAX brand is dependable solid and has been around for a long time.
