Hey! I searched the web and MR but could not find an answer for this:

Tonight at Sam's Club I was checking out the new iPad Air and noticed that Safari had a gray—not black—gradient interface that is so much more appealing to me than the blinding white. It looked "right" to me, and I cannot find anything on the web about it to save my life. Anyone?

It was probably in Private browsing mode. Returning to normal browsing resets the light "theme".

Thanks for your answer :). I did try that trick but it creates a BLACK skin. What I saw today was medium-dark gray gradient. Have never seen it before but i like it!

You probably saw a white webpage under private browsing mode, thus giving the translucent black a gray look.

No, this was like a new interface look. It was not site dependent but rather consistent. The sales guy there said he liked it, too, and wanted to figure out how to get it. Could it be specific to the new Airs?

It was Safari for sure and not perhaps another browser that might look very similar (when inside it)?

Alternatively, perhaps something with increasing contrast in accessibility settings and then regular or private mode?

Yes it is, but Privacy Mode just turns mine BLACK. There is no subtle interplay like in your pics (which is what I saw today at Sam's). I have a Retina iPad and my ios is up to date. What am I missing?

You say retina iPad.... Is that a 3/4 or air

It's a large iPad, two versions before air. I turned off some of the features I chose in Accessibility (contrast, etc.) and tried private browsing and got closer to your pics. Still too dark, not balanced like your pics.

----------

Also, when I powered off and powered on and then opened up Safari, it was lighter like yours for a second and then went darker. After that every time I open it it's darker. Hmm.

The iPad 3 got a gimp'd version of ios7 like the iPhone 4 did. That is this issue you have.

Go to settings, Safari, then Private Browser set to on.
