Gray Loading icon that does not want to ever go away

Why does this happen? How do I make it go away???
(see attached image)

it is ugly, and I tried to install another app from the app store, and now i have TWO OF THOSE UGLY THINGS! No way to cancel either, what was Apple thinking not having the x icon on those!
