It really comes down to how you plan to use it. I don't think it's any reason to panic. You just have to realize there is going to be some organization going on. That's the fun part for some people.

Anyone who going to be a power user of an iPad I think would already know that they need a high capacity machine. I bought a 32GB, but that was my plan all along. Being that it's my first iPad, I don't really know how much storage I need. I do know that I've survived for years on 16gb iPhones no problem. I'm not the kind of user that likes to keep everything on my device. I still have a laptop, desktop and iPhone. That's plenty of storage.

??

My 16 GB iPad 2 was constantly full, and I got really sick of having to allocate space for new stuff. Ordered the 32 GB for my new iPad for that reason.

and why was it constantly full? sounds like you didn't buy the correct size to begin with. it has nothing to do with the bigger file sizes of retina though

----------

it doesnt work beautifully. You cant store apps and games on it :(

but it will store all your music and video files, which takes up the majority of space in most ipads.

iPad2 user here. I'm on a budget and had to decide on 16gb with 3G or 32gb wifi-only; I decided on 32gb and am happy. Like others said, I'm sure that I could pare down to fit the 16gb, but I really like having tons of room for photos/videos of my family available when I travel. This is my storage breakdown:
  • Audio: 2.3gb
  • Video: 1.6gb
  • Photos: 5.9gb
  • Apps: 13.6gb (magazines and podcasts [I use the amazing Downcast app] are a large portion of this total)
  • Books: .33gb
  • Other: 2.2gb
  • Free: 3.0gb
Music is a smart playlist of anything added in the past x days, so that number varies. Cooking apps and some music apps can take up a lot of space. Like others said, iMovie, iPhoto, Pages and Numbers are much bigger now. Magazines take up a lot of space on my iPad; Vanity Fair issues are 300-600mb each, for example, and I usually have a backlog of 1-2 issues. New Yorkers are over 100mb each.

I wonder if it magazine downloads will now take up twice as much space because of retina...

Well ebooks shouldnt at least. Surely its just text that will be rendered to the new resolution. Obviously anything with graphical content will go up in size.

My iPhone 4 currently has 10.5GB free. I'll be using the iPad for the things I currently use my iPhone for such as browsing in bed, email etc...so 16GB is more than enough for me!

Are you actually being serious? It was constantly full because I commute a lot and had lots of games, books, magazines, music and other apps on it. I used it for way more things than I thought I would. Therefore, for my new one, I upgraded to 32 GB. Not out of "fear" as you put it before, but out of the need for more storage.

The retina display and better camera will cause some things to take up more space. This isn't fear, this is just the way it is.

that's why i said you bought the wrong size to begin with...this thread is about how the increase in file sizes will affect storage need. a lot of people are upgrading to 32/64 because of the fear that they will run out of space due to the larger file sizes. obviously if you fill up your ipad with a ton of crap, you'll need more space regardless of what retina will do to file size.

Yes, but consider this scenario that is very probably for a lot of people.
They had an iPad 1/2 that was 16GB and they have a fair amount of apps and lets say there iPad has a total of 10GB worth of stuff on it.

They create a backup to sell/give away the iPad 2 and buy the new iPad.
They get it (Also 16GB because they didn't know about the information this thread states)

They restore from backup, but when they update all their apps (when the developers ready them) to support the new resolution, that 10GB worth of apps that easily fit on their iPad 1/2 could very well pass the storage limit for a 16gb iPad giving them the message "You don't have enough storage space to update"

I already thought about this. I think its right on. The apps are going to keep getting bigger. In my opinion the 16 gig is best for a person that only surfs, checks emails, and reads books. I play a few games and got myself the 64 gig. My wife doesn't game much at all, so I got her the 32. Some of those games take up crazy space. Not to mention if you want to have a few of your favorite movies that netflix does not offer saved in high deff.

I still think they should have kept the same prices, but offered 32, 64, 128. That is just my opinion.

Well, I would have liked it too.. but one reason they probably didn't is the same reason they probably didn't upgrade the front camera.

With the new screen and all, Apple is making less % profit per iPad sold this year than off the iPad 1/2.

Assuming that there is about 14GB of usable space on a new 16gb ipad, i can see how a user in that scenario might have issues. even so, they had been using about 70% of their capacity on their ipad 2. when it gets to that point, i think it's safe to start thinking about larger capacities for their needs.

I personally downsized to a 16 this time, because even if the apps and space I currently use double... I would only be using 8.8 gb. I'm probably not your typical user. I always like to keep my computers and devices running lean and don't care to put everything I own onto my devices anyway.

I don't buy this. I've always had 16gb and never needed more. With Apple TV, Drop Box, iTunes Match, and iCloud Services, it doesn't make sense anymore to store everything you own on your mobile device. The way the technology is going, that's pretty silly and getting outdated fast.

But Apple loves it since buying the most expensive iPad by so many people is one of the reasons Apple is the richest company in the world. I myself refuse to sink $700-800 into a tablet that'll likely be outdated in 2-3 years. I'll save that extra $200 as down payment toward an iPad 4.

I have a similar mindset, I've alway gotten the 16GB as I mainly use my iPad for Web and video (mostly via youtube) consumption. This could pose a problem for others though.

I originally bought a 64gb ipad 1. Then I purchased a 32gb when the ipad 2 was released to save cash, but found it was to small and traded it for a 64gb ipad2. A few months later I traded that for a macbook air. And repurchased another ipad 2 32gb because I had missed it so much.

I have an immense library of apps that I purchased from my first ipad that carried over to the new ipad. In addition I also like to load up pdfs onto my ipad and carry about 8-10gbs of audio, audiobooks, itunesU and podcasts. Before I sold the ipad 2 32gb a month ago, it was getting really tough to manage everything. And ultimately I was forced to move to the icloud for my audio and delete a majority of apps off the ipad, unfortunately I have a tremendous amount of meta tag issues. So my library is completely mismatched.

For this launch I will be returning to the new ipad 64gb verizon 4g and enjoy the freedom of space that comes with it.:apple:

I was starting to get worried that I ordered a 16gb but i'll be fine. I pretty much only download news/sports news apps and notetaking apps. I have my iphone for games, my ipod classic for music, my macbook for storing movies and my imac for other movies and the rest of my stuff as well. And the only magazine I read is ESPN, which I get in physical form anyways. I'll probably just use that extra 100 dollars for Applecare or squaretrade :D

^ I've been considering the same.

I completely agree. For a long time I was telling friends and family to steer clear of large capacity electronics due to the obvious move towards cloud storage. But when it's become clear now that this cloud storage only solves some problems, I've changed my tune.

Unfortunately, it's not always financially possible. I know I'll be sticking with 16GB, but much to my chagrin.

I was debating between the 32GB and the 64GB, as I only used like 20GB on my iPad 1. After reading this article, and realizing that I play a whole lot of games on my iPad, I am glad I went with the 64GB. Now if only it would move from Middletown, PA to my home...

I think I will be good with 16GBs for my first go at an iPad. I will go for more next year if I need it.

Mine is at a FedEx just a few hours away, been there for 4 days and remains there!
