.....in your opinion. Not as a universal truth.;)

I happen to like his voice*. It also really depends on the song/album/era.

Well, of course that's just my like my opinion, man. What is this, second grade? ;)

*except for the way it sounds in the past few years. At this point, I think he should retire.

Him and Diane Rehm. I often wonder where Dylan goes from a young guy pretending to have an old man's voice to actually having an old man's voice. Was there a transitional period where you can tell or did he do it seamlessly?

Not *really* a cover, since it's an old gospel song, but Johnny Cash made an excellent recording of "God's Gonna Cut You Down" (aka "Run On") - anyone that tries to record it again is going to have a very tough act to follow.

I thought Duran Duran did a great job with Grandmaster Flash's and the Furious Five's "White Lines."

Johnny Cash covering any song makes it better. :D

From the rock genre: Van Halen did some excellent covers, especially "You Really Got Me" and "Dancing in the Streets". Oh yeah, they also did a cover of "Happy Trails" that was fun.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of Hendrix's "Little Wing" is simply amazing. I also liked Eric Clapton's covers of "Knockin on Heaven's Door" and "I Shot the Sherrif".

^^^^a fine choice, iJH.

I never thought of his voice as an old man's voice. It's a unique sound, an acquired taste, and I can understand why some people aren't fans.

IMO, I think he lost it at some point after 1997 following his Grammy award winning album, Time Out of Mind. I really dig his voice on that album. Then the next album came out, and I was just like "aww, man."

When I saw him perform on one of the awards shows this past year (was it the Grammys?), I was just embarrassed for him.

I don't think you can take performing out of Bob Dylan and still be left with Bob Dylan. He's not going to retire until he's on his deathbed.

Back to the topic, I nominate Joan Jett's I Love Rock 'n Roll and Paul Anka's Smells Like Teen Spirit

Well, he is on the Never-ending Tour, isn't he?:p

Regardless, he's pretty amazing to keep up his touring pace.

I love that Paul Anka album. They played it for months outside of The Bay in downtown Toronto. It was on my daily route to work and the gym.

I'm listening to it right now. It's the perfect background music and I play it at parties all the time. I love the glimmer people's expressions get when they recognize the lyrics.

SRV covering Jimi's Little Wing? It is to weep. :(

The Corrs did a much better cover of Little Wing than Stevie... his version was awful. Typical SRV style - which works great on some songs - but still awful.

Covers are always interesting to listen to. A few that I enjoy are:

Halestorm covering Guns 'n Roses' Out Ta Get Me
Cowboy Junkies covering Bruce Springsteen's State Trooper
Yngwie Malmsteen & Dio covering Aerosmith's Dream On
Eric Clapton covering J.J. Cale's Cocaine
Eric Clapton covering Jimi Hendrix's Stone Free
Tracy Chapman covering Bob Dylan's The Times They Are A-Changin'
The Beach Boys' covering The Mamas and the Papas' California Dreamin'

Ha Ha, that is one funny question:)

The question of Dylan's voice is subjective, I think his voice suits his songs, although, a radio presenter recently commented on his China concerts and said that certain songs had been disallowed for their political content.
He then went on to say that it didn't really matter because no-one could understand what he was singing anyway..........

I guess if you know his songs well you just kind of fill in the slurred bits :)

Maybe someone ought to start a Dylan thread..............

What about "Imagine" by A Perfect Circle?

I won't say it's better than the original one by Lennon but it's worth checking out. It's different and also very good imo.

Other ones I like:

The Man Who Sold the World by Bowie covered by Nirvana
Tenement / Lily of the Valley / flick of the wrist by Queen covered by Dream Theater.

Harry Nilsson - Without You
Happy Mondays - Step On (Cover of "He's gonna step on you again" by John Kongos)
Manfred Mann - Mighty Quinn
Fiona Apple - Across the Universe
Muse - Feeling Good

Elvis Presley did a Blueberry Hill cover, many people gave credit to Fats Domino for that song but it was actually written further back in history and one of the first popular groups to do it was Glenn Miller's Orchestra.

:)

I also like the instrumental version of Santana's "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" >>

Metallica - Turn The Page
Metallica - Whiskey In The Jar
Metallica - Astronomy
Metallica - Mercyful Fate (medley)
