Yep, had this confirmed to me a whole week ago by multiple Verizon sources. Good to know we got a tweet about it though ;)

This really doesn't mean much. It may be the case now, but 18 months from now, when iPhone 4 contracts end for most, that might not be the case. Verizon can change this policy whenever they wish. In other words, don't bet on this policy being in existence 18 months from now.

Verizon unlimited plans may only be grandfathered for one upgrade cycle, here's proof

I was going through the VZW Support twitter messages and came across this one...

Of course this could all be a glass half empty kind of thing, but when 4G data really starts going there will probably be a new limit put into effect.

So the way I read this: Pay full price for whatever phone you want to keep unlimited mobile hotspot and unlimited phone data. And this is a problem why??
I will gladly hang on to unlimited, takes about 10 seconds to do a cost/benefit. If you use a lot of data

The only point I was trying to make was that Verizon will very possibly be ending the grandfathered in program past 1 upgrade cycle.

Verizo iPhone 4 and Mobile Hotspot option

One thing I noticed was that on AT&T, you must switch (permanently) to the 2GB data capped plan if you want to turn on their 3G Mobile Hotspot feature. However, (and in contrast to AT&T) as it stands now with Verizon, I can switch the 3G Mobile hotspot option on and off without having to switch from my unlimited data plan. needless to say, (and while there is plenty of enmity to go around for each of the carriers) I'm pleased about this since I'm on Verizon now.

    yay.

i get to keep the plan i signed up for a little longer, and they will kindly inform me at some point in the future exactly when and how they are going to kick the chair out from under me.

meanwhile, they are fighting tooth and nail against regulations that might force them to provide equal access to sites and operate with some transparency (net neutrality). comcast customers know how wonderful it is to get throttled.

how benevolent of our digital overlords. i ought to be joyful, as the op says, but i can't seem to share his enthusiasm.

imagine a country where this doesn't happen. it's easy if you try...

Haha looks like I'm going to have to stay on my parents plan with my unlimited data for as long as I can. Hopefully they won't kick me off before I'm 30.

So is it $29.99 for unlimited + $30 tethering?

Yeah. Kind of a cool option to have as long as you've got unlimited and a 4g LTE phone but I also would think that if you racked up a huge amount of data via streaming that they would eventually throttle you.

I would say its good not great...no cheaper options is not "great". I expected this to happen anyways. 3G UMTS didn't really bring more expensive data plans or more limited ones...*sigh*...I would SO get the 2GB plan if it included some type of tethering allowance...
