Or just ditch all your friends who want to exchange messages through RCS/SMS. Keep the ones that only use whatsapp.
Never worry about this RCS/SMS thing and enjoy imessage only with iphone users. Easy.

I’ve not had any issues reported across a fleet of 400 iPhones. Wonder if it’s something related to iMessage registration?
That wouldn’t explain the issues my friends with Androids are having. Mind you, sometimes RCS works. Sometimes it doesn’t. And this is on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile networks. So we leave it turned off.

RCS has worked fine for me since it became available with iOS 18. I find RCS really useful, and its now allowed me to delete WhatsApp. I only used to use WhatsApp for messaging the small amount of my friends that didn't have iPhones, so that I could and they could, send pictures etc.

Not everyone wants to use a third party app to message people who do not have an iPhone and vice versa with Android. Whats as seamless as using the included Message app that comes with the phone, so not sure why you think people with Android phones have no use for RCS.
You might want to try reading my post again. I didn’t say all Android users have no use for RCS. I said my friends with Androids who are having problems with RCS have no use for it and have turned it off, just like I have. Look, if it’s working for you, great. But the Mac Rumors forums have quite a few posts from people for whom RCS is an unreliable mess. And those who I know with Android phone report similar issues with messages that just disappear.

I just don’t think it works well at scale in terms of reliability. Which is why we see an uneven distribution of issues.

Android user here. I would never use a message app by Google. Why do you need it, if you already have WhatsApp, Threema, Signal, Skype and Telegram? RCS is just a trick by Google to collect even more information.
Except that Google didn’t invent RCS.

The Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA)developed Rich Communication Services (RCS). The GSMA is a group of network operators from around the world that works with device manufacturers, software companies, and operating system providers.

Google decided to implement its own version with encryption, then tried to bully Apple into supporting it. Apple’s version of RCS supports the GSMA standard, not Google’s.

But can you use RCS on a third party messaging app? I want to avoid Google Messages.

Deleted. You covered what said. My Bad.

I'm on T-Mobile with an iPhone 14PM. RCS works about 50% of the time for me. I always have it turned on and it randomly drops out and comes back. When it is working, I see RCS in messages and when it isn't, it says SMS. I just have a couple of android users that I message, both on T-Mobile as well. There is a way in the phone to check whether RCS is connected. I can't remember where it is because I don't have my phone handy but when connected, it says "SMS & RCS" and when it isn't, it just says "SMS". So it's not a problem with the recipient phone.

Problem is, I'm not really sure who's to blame. Apple? T-Mobile?

I still have RCS turned off. Never mind emoji reactions. Messages - inbound and outbound - aren’t arriving at their destination. RCS is too buggy and unreliable. And it’s not just me and others with iPhones. Friends with Android phones have no use for RCS either. And yes, we all have carriers that support RCS.
You are confusing something. The name of the buggy thing is iMessage while RCS is a new standard most carriers support. For improved security, you should turn off iMessage.

Just search the net for iMessage exploits, Operation Triangulation, Darcula, zero click iMessage expolit, or - younameit.

If you want to remotely hack an iPhone - it is iMessages, just the first exploit in a long chain, but here is where it all starts. Or more general Messages. Messages is such a complex and blown up App, just because iMessage is so complex and it will never be fixed.

We in the EU can now delete Messages and install another lean and mean messenger.

Hilarious disinformation. Thanks for the laugh, I almost snorted my coffee this morning.

I’ve noticed that now I get proper reaction support on regular SMS texts as well. That was quite a surprise.

So, post me some links that support your idea. And RCS is just a protocol, the protocol isn't known for any weaknesses (iMessage as well).
What is super buggy is Apples implementation of the Messages App (which now supports the iMessage and RCS protocol) - so keep on laughing.

I also have T-Mobile and it will drop out and typically only way to bring it back is to restart my device. Granted there’s only three people in my contact list that have RCS enabled on their android. With the restart fixing it, I’d lean more towards Apple than T-Mobile being the root cause.

None of that matters since RCS turns itself off randomly, and RCS chats constantly revert back to SMS for no reason.

I have to blame apple, since rebooting the phone or disabling and enabling RCS in settings can fix it. I hope they can address it.

I’m not confusing anything. My friends with Android phones have the same issues with RCS.

With the launch of iOS 18, Apple added support for RCS, or Rich Communication Services. RCS replaces SMS/MMS as the default messaging standard for any "green bubble" conversations, and because it's more modern, it supports features like read receipts and typing indicators.

RCS is also supposed to support emoji reactions from Android users, but it wasn't working properly when iOS 18 launched. It's not clear what changed, but The Verge says that something that Google or Apple tweaked made it work as of this week.

When an Android user uses an emoji reaction to a message that you've sent over RCS, the emoji will now show up in line with the message bubble, just like it does on with iOS Tapback reactions.

Prior to now, if an Android user used an emoji reaction to a message in a conversation with an iPhone user, the emoji would show up on a separate line, which was confusing and not how the feature was meant to work.

The Verge says it tested emoji reactions between iPhones running iOS 18.1 and several different Android phones, and reactions display both ways as intended.

Very few of my Android contacts have RCS switched on and that's the main problem, it won't take of as intended and it will just die as most google apps

Not sure how buggy it is, however most of my Android user contacts, don't have it switched on, so how it works is really irrelevant

Hmmm
Good for you, however I find that most of my Android users in the UK, haven't got RCS switched on, that's really the biggest problem, until it's switched on by default for both iPhone and Android users, it's never going to works as intended and replace services like WhatsApp

RSC group messaging is still buggy at best…. Constantly flipping RCS/SMS..
