I'd say aluminum is silver and not gray/grey.

That would be polished aluminium as opposed to brushed, yes? Of course brushed aluminium only appears grey because it mixes and reflects the colours of its surroundings. And since the colors of an average scene "integrate to grey" (a principle used in old fashioned color processing to get a photo's color balance right) it looks, well, boringly gray.
