I have a August 2010 27 inch iMac. It worked fine for over 3 years then suddenly it stopped. All I get is a grey screen with the Apple icon in the middle with a progress bar underneath.

There is no progress shown on the progress bar. I've tried all the options on the Mac website, but to no avail (holding down the shift key, reseting the PRAM), inserting the original disk etc.

Can anything be done or is it just dead?

Many thanks

If your Mac was running 10.7 or later, then try this link.

The steps are the same for Lion or Mavericks as well.

If you are running Snow Leopard, try to repair the disk from Disk Utility located on the Restore Media. My guess is the hard drive or RAM. You can also run a hardware test by holding D at boot.
