Apple have you lost it all? Google here I come. Google can make i awesome OS whit nice UI, Split Screen.

Plenty of people have had similar thoughts about many updates (for many different products). And yet here we are.

When introducing it originally, Steve Jobs promised to standardize and thus open up the technology behind Face Time, so it could become interoperable with other vendors like communication protocols should be. I'm still waiting for that to happen

If I have iOS 12 and set up a Group FaceTime call will ALL call participants need iOS 12 to participate? Would those on lower iOS versions be able to hear the others in the group and not see them?

This may have been the reason for not submitting the technology behind Facetime for standardization. The article did not make that connection and did not say which kind of patents Apple allegedly has infringed with Facetime and iMessage. Nevertheless, patent trolls are indeed harming interoperability.
