I will try to be crystal clear here. I have playlists that include a certain subset of my albums, which I download to my ipod like everyone else does. I would like to create a group of existing tracks from different albums in this subset (say, for example, all the different versions of Joe Henderson's Recorda-me if I am studying that tune intensely) & have them play in a group on my ipod like an album just does naturally. I read that the new iTunes had some kind of grouping feature but can't find much about it. Is it possible for me to do what I'm talking about without making duplicate copies of some tracks and artificially editing the the album & artist attributes (a big pain!)

I must not be understanding your question, it seems to me you just need to create a playlist with the songs in the order you want and copy that playlist to your ipod.
