That doesn’t come even remotely close to solving the issue of spam phone calls. Though I think a big part of that should be up to carriers and not device manufacturers.
Seems pretty well solved for me - I never get any nuisance calls anymore (or rather I do, I'm just not made aware of them, which is fine).

I live in an area where everyone gets a ton of spam calls from randomly generated numbers that have common area codes and exchanges.

Filtering “unknown” callers doesn’t help anyone in this case. Spam calls are a much bigger issue than just filtering unknown. Not to mention some people get a lot of legitimate calls from unknown/private callers.

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean. As far as I can see you're listing three facts about these spam calls:
  1. Lots of people get them
  2. They're from local numbers
  3. You get a lot of them
None of those points affect the efficacy of the silence unknown calls feature, so I don't understand why it's not a solution for you based on that. Sorry if I've misunderstood your point somehow.

Not to mention some people get a lot of legitimate calls from unknown/private callers.
Yeah, that is the drawback of this solution. I live with it on the grounds that a legitimate caller will hopefully leave a message or send a text/email when I don't answer, but I appreciate that might not work for some people.

My bad, I partly mis-interpreted what silencing unknown callers does (in iPhone settings).

Turning on that feature would prevent these spam calls for the most part, but these calls in my area are rampant and use area codes and exchanges similar to your own number.

For ex, if my number is 123-456-7890, I will get a heck of a lot of calls from 123-456-XXXX (where XXXX just seems to be randomly generated). I understand they're spam, but I know many users who don't. They see the missed call, call the number back and it was a legitimate number that someone has. Its just that the Caller ID is being spoofed by whoever or whatever is doing the spamming.

Its unfortunate as Apple has done what they can, but the issue really can't be solved entirely by them. We could enable the silence unknown callers option, but then would be missing legitimate calls as well (clients and private numbers). Not to get into detail, but a lot of calls received in health care and I can't just limit it to who I have saved in my contacts or recent calls list.

Yeah, it's certainly not a perfect solution. When I get deliveries to my flat sometimes the intercom doesn't work and the courier has to call me, so when I have a delivery coming I turn this feature off.

To be honest I don't think there's much else that can be done about it - it's an inherent flaw in a system like phone or email where you don't need pre-aproval to contact someone. I think we'd be better off moving to a system whereby people do seek pre-approval. For example in my case courier companies should ensure all their calls come from one number, and they should provide it when the delivery is booked so you can whitelist it. I think generally all of society should go this way.

Exactly. That’s what I tell people when they complain and ask what they can do to stop it. I usually say “its like trying to prevent someone from walking up and knocking on your front door”

People switch their phones off, period? Why? Hardly anyone does that, for many, many years now. You never heard of Do Not Disturb?
You must be from southern PA after your use of the word “switch”.
“switch the lights off” is a common phrase” well at least you didn’t say “outten the iPhone”. :p
