But I get it, there are many mainstream news media sources I steer clear of as well.

He really isn’t. He’s been pretty scathing of Apple of late, “something’s rotten in the state of Cupertino” and all that

I agree with him that it's a good carry around device replacement for someone that had an iPad with a keyboard. That's the camp I'm coming from on this purchase. Typing this on a 512GB Indigo MacBook Neo. I just didn't use the stylus as much as I thought I would and I found iPadOS a bit limiting at times over the years.
