No built-in calculator?
Really, Steve J.?
No calculator?
I mean... no calculator?

I'm starting to think the iPad wasn't thought through all the way.

I knew if from day one.

Wait...!
I figured it out.
Steve Jobs wants you to use the iPad's version of iWork and make a spreadsheet/graph to do your (simple) calculations. That way they can get another $10+ out of everyone.

A 10" 1024x768 calculator with big buttons is handy for the elderly I guess but most of us prefer our calculators to be about the size of say, oh I know, about the size of a pocket calculator, perhaps.

Making something 'fit specifically for iPad' might actually mean the type of application or widget is no longer fit for purpose.
I guess you don't actually use a calculator. The tiny calcs on phones, even the iPhone, are tolerable at best. Great for figuring a tip, not much more. I would love to see a full size 10 keypad, which is only 3" across on normal keyboards/pads. Keying would still be slower than a physical keypad, just like the touch keyboard will be slower, but this would be nice to have since it is possible on the larger screen. The basic calculator ought to have the option, at least. Save tiny keys for more complex calcs that don't generally require fast entry, like business or scientific or graphing.

Regardless of the size, dropping it completely must be a bad rumor, that is just dense.

No phone I've ever owned allowed an alarm clock feature that allowed me to set it for different times based on the day of week.

Standard on Symbian on Nokias btw. Any number of alarms, workday only repeating alarms. You can assign which days are workdays. Time synced with network operator time server/ntp. All that sort of stuff.

I'm a bit of a calculator geek - rocking a retro Casio fx-6000G that I've had for 25 years now.

That's about as far as most people go with calculators on phones/computers. Why complicate them more when all you want is a simple calculator?

Never understood tip calculators though - divide by 10 isn't complicated.

Exhibit a as to why you should stay away from first generation products. So by waiting a few months we get a camera, better Widgets, and insulation from all sorts of potential problems... maybe even price reductions.

Actually you'll probably wait closer to a year. I'm planning on buying one now and if there is a significant update next year I'll buy a new one and either give my old one to my wife or sell it on eBay. Waiting for the perfect piece of tech means waiting a while.

Seriously it doesn't seem to add up,

A blank key on the iPad keyboard, (there are no blank keys on the mac, they have f numbers on them and they are assignable, I used f6 for screenshots for example).

The iPad (as far as we are concerned will not have assignable keys), surely Apple could have thought of something to go there even if it is pointless.

Then removing features such as calculator, weather and the alarm clock. I use calculator everyday, weather everyday and my alarm clock every day!

Seriously they sell giant calculators in shops, as people tend to lose them, apple to take over that market lol :L

Anyway I think they must be working on some kind oh dashboard which will go on that key, that or an iSight camera and iChat, which I really really really doubt! (however I expect it will be in the next version.

Facebook on the iPad will become the definitive version of facebook. The iPhone version is already way more pleasant to look at than the desktop version. I'm looking forward to seeing what the facebook folks come up with for the iPad.

The definite version? You mean, as in the version that can't play or upload videos, nor interact with the majority of applications available on facebook?

Or do a search for people outside of your network? Or delete comments off your wall? Or even edit your own information?

Just a FYI the things I have bolded you can do (at least on the 3GS).

One reason for excluding weather and calculator might be that people complained about not being able to remove them from the iphone, and that people wanted to use their own weather apps. Maybe apple wants to remove built-in apps that have "content" (this is not really the right word for it but i don't know a better way to put it) and just leave basic phone apps and have people go to the app store to find apps that delivers content and not just help you utilize the hardware

Other alternative: the thing is a poorly conceived rush job with very little development resource spent on it, just as the iPhone OS has been so obviously starved of similar resource over the last two and a bit years.

They gave up because they couldn't get it to look nice? If that's not the ultimate in form-over-function...

My cell phone, even my portable GPS have built-in calculators. Every PDA I've ever owned had one, right down to the two-line Sharp memo pad.

Too much space to fill? Just take a photo-realistic image of a calculator sitting on a wooden desk or something. That'll kill some of the space. Or make it an adding machine with a virtual tape. Or a TI-85 mockup with a huge screen. C'mon, they could have had a field day with this. How about a nice big scientific calculator? How about TWO calculators at once? ;)

Weather? How can there be too much screen real estate for a weather app? Look at what the TV stations do, this could have been a huge opportunity for great looking graphics, mapping, trends, statistics...

Well, here's hoping the third party apps can fill in the gaps!

Settle down pardner.

There is no certainity that this rumor is even true.

If it is, they have likely tried various things and scrapped them.

I certainly wouldn't have an issue with Apple holding back putting up apps that look less than what they want. In fact I applaud them for it. More developers need to follow that credo.

As we will see though, too many developers will be more than happy to rush out new apps. Some will even charge for new exclusive upgraded ipad apps that are simply blown up versions of the iPhone apps.

So even if this rumor is true, which I would guess is probably less than 50% probable.... it is still a good sign that they would want the device and the applications they create for it to look right and feel right. This is one of the reasons why Apple is kicking the crap out of everyone in the computer and consumer electronics world these days. They take their time and they actually care about look and feel issues.

Someone just needs to design an app called "clock, weather, stocks, calculator" that does all 4 things at once, each in a seperate quadrant of the screen.

Interesting way to crack into multi-tasking. Perhaps allowing for a split-screen mode, either side by side or top and bottom, where certain apps could be designed to run on half the screen so you could run two smaller apps at once.

Glad to see this UI issue getting some attention. Developers need to realize that simply blowing up their apps bigger won't be a good enough solution for the iPad.

(And similarly, just a bigger NYTimes app -- like that underwhelming demo version at the iPad launch -- is a far cry from realizing the iPad's true potential for published content and the future of newspapers!)

I'm starting to think the iPad wasn't thought through all the way.

Seemed that way to me at launch. The iPad's software UI just seems far from ready for primetime. It almost feels like a beta version!

(Too much effort to avoid departing from the iPhone's UI successes, methinks.)

Half-Baked is more like it. There's some serious shortcomings on this thing. 2nd gen should be more promising.

How so exactly? Everyone who had hands on time with it said it was blazing fast and had a very responsive feel to it.

Then, please point out how? I'm sitting here with a 3GS and the facebook app. The only media upload option I see is for pictures. Tried that, but the upload screen doesn't show any videos available in the camera roll.

I did find something called PixelPipe that will get video onto facebook, but that isn't the facebook app. (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/728775/)

Delete something off my wall? The only option on the screen is clicking the "+" symbol next to a comment, which gives me the option to Like or Comment.

I think the iPad has a ton of potential, but is it just me when it feels like it's a bit weird to release something so new without it being finished? It's not like they HAD to announce it now. Thankfully software can fix this, but it doesnt seem like apple to take so much time to develop this and then just release it without a few key apps.

Makes me wonder if Apple is trying to keep iPhone sales up, and keep iPhone profits going for ATT in the end...

Given the size of the iPad screen and the lack of multitasking that it could look weird... so much for the iPad replacing my iPhone....

Another beta product making its way out of Apple just like the first two generations of iPhone that were missing cut-and-paste. I love how Apple can actually sell a beta product on the open market and not get flack for it. I can't believe they would ship something like this without basic calculator functionality. Again, a very simple and basic function is missing.

Assuming a calculator is added at some point... what if I'm looking at a web site and want to calculate a few numbers on the page that I'm looking at. With the iPad and iPhone I would have to exit the web browser to launch the calculator, but then the numbers I'm trying to add have disappeared. A dashboard-style implementation of calculator and other necessities would be much better since it overlays what's on the screen instead of replacing it.

Also, I doubt we will ever see a calculator or weather app that properly utilizes the full screen of the iPad - it's just not necessary. Why on earth would you even want to design a calculator that uses the full iPad screen? Widgets would be a much better way.

I use the iPhone the same way.... and would want the iPad to work the same... May have to wait it out till late this year or next year at this point for an iPad...

I guess the first question is are you running the most recent version of the app? When I click the camera icon my options are Take Photo or Video and Choose from Library. To delete something off your wall just swipe like you would to delete an email.

LOL, now it doesn't even have a calculator? This thing just keeps getting better and better.

With a larger screen, the need for native apps for things like Facebook is gone. Why bother with an app, when I can just use the browser? A lot of iPhone "apps" that are really just front-ends to existing sites will become obsolete. This jibes with Apple's recent poo-pooing of these types of apps.
