I am new to AIM as i am from Europe,

but if somebody asks for my AIM, can i give
them my GTalk / Gmail address ?

    Would that work ?

Or does it have to be an AIM address ?

    thanks!

You would need to create an AIM account. Your Gtalk/Gmail address is not a valid AIM name.

Gtalk/Gmail (along with hundreds of other providers) uses the standard for IM, XMPP (aka Jabber). AIM still uses a legacy protocol that is not compatible with XMPP.

If they're using Adium then they can use any of the supported protocols, but you'd both need to be using the same protocol. Adium wont let you magically use a Gtalk account to talk to an AIM one.
