GTX580 3GB in cMP 4,1?

HI guys, ill be removing the GTX680 I have in my MP 4,1 with upgrade to 5,1 and 6 core CPU to a new dedicated box with 2x 680 Sli for my PC2 , so Ill be left with the GTX580 3GB, now as far as performance wise this card will be just fine for the stuff I do with my MP, a few old-ish games, like SC2, Diablo 3, GTA and a bunch of other 2-3 year old games.

What I am a little worried about is the power draw on the 580?

Ive got a mini power lead that will go to the 8 pin socket, and ofcourse the other 6 pin wil go to the other one, but will the CPU (stock) and the mobo handle this ok?

Specs says this...

• 600 Watt or greater power supply with a minimum of 42 Amp on the +12 volt rail.****
• PCI Express, PCI Express 2.0 or PCI Express 3.0 compliant motherboard with one graphics slot.
• An available 6-pin PCI-E power connector and an available 8 pin PCI-E power connector

Ive got no additional cards in my MP, and I can disconnect the DVD drive to save a few amps if required...

I haven't flashed this card to MAC yet, not even sure if there is a rom to do so, so at this stage ill be having to do the winslows/Mac shuffle blind, which sucks.. any ideas on how to remedy that?

dont think there is a mac rom for it, only think gtx680 and some ati cards have that.

i think it will work but if it over draws power you will just get a hard shut down for safety.
no point unplugging the DVD drive.
may be worth doing the two 6pin power to one 8 pin then 8 pin to two 6 pin to balance the load. (but may not be needed)

There are some Fermi ROMs floating around, but flashing would require soldering a bigger EEPROM onto your card.

You don't have to do the Windows/Mac shuffle blind, use startup disk from preferences to go to Windows from Mac and then use the bootcamp utility icon in Windows to go back to Mac

not gonna change the eprom, failing that, ill just wait for another gtx 680 to roll up at a decent price. I have the GTX580 3gb in there now. No issues so far, no shut downs. must be going ok then I guess.

iv seen posts showing the 6pin ports can handle a lot so think y will be ok, if you start geting hard shutdowns you may have to look in to it.

Let us know if that GTX 580 holds on with your stock power supply. I just pulled one from a PC and am thinking of putting it into my cMP 3,1

I had a gtx 470 in my 3,1 octa for heaps before I sold it, no issues. I figure the gtx 470 and the 580 must be pretty close to on par in regards to tdp.
