Gurman: Apple Already Working on 15-Inch MacBook Air With M3 Chip

He also said: "Apple currently working on iPhone to be launched in the fall, same as every year, duh. I'm a tool."

the SoC. people expected yearly updates and then the worldwide silicon shortage happened—just feels like quite a trend on MR where they’re constantly in a lose-lose situation.

no yearly updates: “where are the updates we were promised?!”

yearly updates: “why are they upgrading the computer just a YEAR after I bought my new one?!”

thankfully, there are a lot of voices of reason here. a yearly upgrade has become virtually unnecessary with the advent of AS (and this extends to the A-series, which it’s clear was their near-15 year practice run for the M-series). (oh man, another post gushing about my M2 MBP) my laptop perfectly suits my needs and barring some kind of accident (and even then, minus loss/theft, I’m covered under AppleCare+ after one too many out-of-pocket logic board replacements over the years), I can’t see myself updating for at least another five years.

unless I magically become rich and can update just for the sake of it. but I’d like to think I would allocate that capital in a bit wiser of a manner 🤪
I’m not sure why anyone expected the M chip refreshes to be yearly.
The M chips are just the continuation of the old iPad A-X chips, and those weren’t yearly.
A9X: September 2015
A10X: June 2017
A12X: October 2018
M1: November 2020
M2: June 2022
18-24 months has been the norm for the last 8 years.

Not gonna happen. My guess is that the MBA gets a processor refresh and Apple calls it a day. Maybe some other minor improvements here and there.
No reason why not. There is nothing Pro about a 120hz screen. Even Ross Young is saying ProMotion screens are coming to the non-Pro iPhones in 2025. Apple can do the same with their Macbook lineup.

What about the 13" MB Pro (with Touch Bar)? I love the small size & TouchBar.
Mark Gurman, in his most recent newsletter, said Apple was working on an M3 update for the 13" MBP and 24" iMac. I don't anticipate we'll see those until early 2024

So M2 across all chips looks like roughly 20% increase over the M1 and has been called a stop-gap. What are we thinking for M3? 20% again or will it be more power-efficiency focused? People seem to think the 3N process will deliver huge benefits over M1 > M2 but I'm more interested in raw power than battery.

likely it comes out roughly a year later…which is what people have been asking for (yearly updates) this whole time…
yeah, I think I'll check out the 15" in store.. and if I like it, maybe have sights on it for the M3 release in late 2024 - thats when I figure they will update it .

Great! My M2 is on it way this week and I can't wait to see what it will be worth when I go to trade it in next year. Looks like my computers just like my phones are a "lease with option to buy" program. UGH.

It‘s likely a combination of a lot of things. I would suggest taking it into Apple and have a Genius check it out. Good luck! 🫶🏻
Thanks, but I already did and I've spent some time with them on the phone. They have no answers, was this way out of the box and has remained that way for 8 months. Same with a 2017 MBP and MBA - they used to last 10 hours, then suddenly one day only 4-5. I think there was malware on a refurbished computer I bought from Apple, because that's exactly when the problem started. Maybe it was in the hardware and spread throughout the network. Now I seem to be stuck with it.

Sorry to hear that. Did you purchase that directly from Apple (going into an Apple Store or ordering from Apple.com)? I only ask because I’ve had battery issues on one Apple product that I ordered from Amazon… 😣

I very much doubt that Apple themselves would ship a refurbished device with malware installed. It would come with the disk erased and all firmware restored to its factory new state.

I would doubt that too, but what other explanation is there? The battery on the refurbished computer only lasted 4-5 hours the first day. One would think they test the battery life before shipping it out, right? A few days later, someone else's 2017 MBA on the same network goes from 9-10 hour battery life to 4-5 and slows down (and it's been that way since). I sent the refurbished computer back, but the problem on her computer remained. Then when I bought the new MBP a few months later, same problem. Every new device we get has crap battery life, including iphones. We have 3 iPhone SE 2s and 1 iPhone SE 3, and they all last 4-5 hours max with just web browsing, texting, etc. even without video. It has to be something on our network, and the problem started when I got that refurbished mac from Apple.

I read that malware can be put into the hardware somehow and thus restoring it to its factory state would have no effect on it. I have no idea, but what I'm sure of is that it all started when I got that refurbished mac. Whoever tested it before shipping didn't even notice that the battery life was only 4-5 hours, so I don't know if I have any confidence they could detect some kind of stealth malware hidden in the laptop.
