The upcoming iOS 18 update for the iPhone will include unspecified "updates" to Control Center, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

iOS-18-Control-Center-Feature.jpg

If that sounds familiar, it is because Control Center was rumored to be revamped on both iOS 15 and iOS 17, but neither update ended up introducing any significant changes to the feature, which provides quick access to system functions like Wi-Fi, display brightness, volume, and more. However, both of those rumors proved to be from unreliable sources for Apple leaks, whereas Gurman is a more reputable source.

MacRumors has learned that Apple has internally tested a redesigned Control Center for iOS 18, but we cannot confirm if these changes have been finalized.

Apple will unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on June 10, and the first beta should be made available to members of the Apple Developer Program immediately after the presentation. The first public beta of iOS 18 will likely follow in July, and the update should be widely released to all users with a compatible iPhone in September.

Is it really crying out for a re-design? It seems to do what it does well enough, is there some killer feature missing that it really should have? If they're not careful they'll add too many buttons to it and it will just become another Settings screen.

For me having the ability to hold down and rearrange buttons would be an improvement. You can even do this on the Watch but for some reason in iOS you have to go to Settings, reorder a list and guess where buttons will end up.

Also add a Settings button in there. I should be able to swipe down and go straight to Settings from anywhere, not go digging around the Home Screen.

As mundane as it seems, Control Center is one of those little corners of iOS I find myself using many times a day. Interested to see what they're bringing. Wouldn't mind some of those buttons optionally being larger, or maybe for third-party apps to be able to add quick little controls there.

Well right now you can delete all but a few of them to curate to just what you need.

AI is for 15 series only, thanks to Apple skimping on RAM for years and no actual direction or vision.
Well… maybe they did have vision… sales vision.

Regardless, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are the only models with 8GB of RAM. I doubt that most of the new AI features have one of this devices as a minimum requirement, leaving out models such as the iPhone 14 Pro or the regular 15.

I'm guessing iPhone 12 and up will be able to enjoy most AI features. I'm guessing other AI features will be locked behind a subscription paywall possibly with iCloud+.

PLEASE PLEASE add a toggle for "silence unknown callers". It's always so annoying to have to dig through several pages of settings to turn it off (and then remember to turn it back on) - when you're waiting for a call from say, your doctor's office.

I would love some color coded icons.

This is really what's missing. Not just color coded, actual full color icons would be really nice.

(Yes, I'm still angry about the color disappearing from sidebar icons in Finder. That's still incredibly annoying.)

Already is. Create a shortcut. Or add your doctors as a contact.

Based on Apple recent history of changes for change's sake and the total disregard for usability, my hopes are not high.

iOS 7 - introduction of iOS Control Center
iOS 8 - minor tweaks/changes
iOS 9 - more minor tweaks/changes
iOS 10 - first major redesign [multi-page version]
iOS 11 - second and more major redesign/overhaul [full screen with all the toggles]

Since then Control Center looked pretty much the same except for new buttons introduced in newer versions...

They have been harping on about their incredible, world class, cutting edge neural engines in every device for years and years now. And with their clear worry about being behind on AI, they better not skimp on older phones this year. At the very least for improved Siri and autocorrect. That's all LLMs are, really. Very good autocorrect.

I suspect that most devices will get most of the AI features. What may be different is that newer devices may run the AI locally and faster but older devices will need to use server-side AI.
