Honestly, people like novelty. This is just a way to get people excited. Foldables, to me, are sort of useless for the reasons you mentioned. Slightly bigger screen, but still not usable enough. I'd just rather have a Mac or a bigger iPad.

Have been waiting for a foldable from Apple for a very long time. But with no telephoto lens and FaceID, don't think I will get one. Unfortunately don't think Apple will release a foldable with telephoto lens in the next 2 to 3 years.

$2000 price point is looking nice for us who are waiting to acquire this at a later time. I want Ultra for when I'm at home its a nice consolidation of iPhone and iPad Mini. However I need faceID for an outside use device.

Ill be looking to upgrade my iphone 17e with anniversary phone. My X held off from launch till this year when I upgraded to a 17e, and could've gone an extra year if I really needed it to or wanted a backup phone to rely on.

By the time the anniversary iPhone XX comes out this should be around $1500-1000. I'll be able to get iPhone XX, iPhone Ultra, and the mini 8 in one go as a single refresh and won't be upgrading again for just as long as I did from X to 17e.

Given how much Apple shafts us with exchange rates, I suspect a starting price of around £2,199.

Trying the Samsung Galaxy Fold 8 really sold me on the form factor and on folding phones. But the lack of a telephoto lens is an absolute deal breaker for me (I can live with TouchID, even if I prefer FaceID). Let’s see what happens next year. If the Ultra 2 has restores the telephoto, I’d be a happy camper. For now, complete non-starter, no matter how nice it looks and feels because I rely on that telephoto lens a fair bit.

Totally get it and listen for those people that legitimately use the camera as a primary function of the phone very much understand the reasoning behind, not wanting to compromise. For myself, I rarely take pictures and when I do, it’s typically not something that I’m taking for image quality.

we all know that..... next year fold will have the telephoto lens and Apple Pencil support....
Also... I bet it will have some type of face unlock... but faceID work with payments etc unless paired with an apple watch or some sorts...

Writing in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says people who have used the device – which is reportedly referred to internally as the iPhone Ultra – like how it fits in your pocket, as well as the feel and durability of its hinge mechanism. Testers have also apparently praised the new iPad-like app layouts that take advantage of the larger internal display when the phone is unfolded.

Beyond productivity, video, and gaming, Gurman says Apple's foldable device also performs well as a camera viewfinder. However, the device lacks a telephoto lens, which could cost Apple some sales given the expected price. The device is expected to feature a dual-lens rear camera system built around a 48-megapixel main lens paired with an ultra-wide lens.

The foldable is also expected to fall back on Touch ID integrated into the side button instead of in-display Face ID – a compromise Apple has reportedly made to keep it around 4.5mm thick when unfolded. But like Gurman says, some users may prefer this traditional biometric setup. Like Samsung's recently released Z Fold 8, the iPhone Ultra is said have a 5.5-inch outer display and a roughly 7.8-inch inner display when opened, making for a wide book-style design.

Apple's first foldable is set to be unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at a launch event on or around September 9. Reports suggest the device could start at $2,000 and even climb past $2,500 for higher storage tiers.

I’ll take the camera downgrade for a uniform body design. I detest the camera bump. My phone wobbles when placed on a flat surface and it’s obnoxious (no I don't use a case).

The pre-VAT starting price of the iPhone 17 in the UK is around £665 or $906 USD. The pre-sales tax starting price for the same phone in the U.S. is $829.

The pre-VAT starting price of the iPhone 17 Pro in the UK is around £915 or $1,247 USD. The pre-sales tax starting price for the same phone in the U.S. is $1,099.

Yes, the UK prices are higher but I wouldn't say UK customers are being "shafted" by Apple. Maybe you (should) feel you're being shafted by the UK's high VAT but that's not Apple's fault.

I can see that. But for someone on an iPhone 12 mini like me, I don’t care about telephoto at all. Never had it, and rarely feel the need to zoom more than what digital provides. What does everyone take pictures of?
No faceID hurts though. Unlike telephoto, I use/need that every single use
