Bloomberg's Mark Gurman does not expect Apple to announce any new hardware during its WWDC 2024 keynote on June 10.

"There's no hardware slated to be announced at WWDC, unless Apple unexpectedly previews a new device launching later (to be clear: I don't expect that)," said Gurman, in his Power On newsletter today.

Notably, Gurman now says a new Apple TV model "isn't imminent," despite previously reporting that Apple was aiming to release a new Apple TV in the first half of 2024. The current Apple TV was introduced in October 2022.

Here is when the previous five Apple TV models were announced:

  • Third-generation Apple TV 4K: October 2022
  • Second-generation Apple TV 4K: April 2021
  • First-generation Apple TV 4K: September 2017
  • Apple TV HD: September 2015
  • Third-generation Apple TV: March 2012

The next Apple TV is rumored to feature a faster processor than the current A15 Bionic chip, and even lower pricing. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that the next Apple TV could have a $99 starting price in the U.S., down from $129 currently.

No major design changes have been rumored for the next Apple TV specifically, but Gurman said Apple has considered adding a built-in camera to a future model. tvOS 17 added a FaceTime app to the Apple TV, allowing for users to have video calls on the TV, but this currently requires using the rear camera on a connected iPhone or iPad.

Bummer
There goes my outside hope for the iPad Mini 7, some M4 MacBooks or an updated Apple TV

Sounds like a entire presentation about "AI stuff coming later this year"
👎

Major "meh" for me

So many product lines are just in really weird spots of "not much has happened in a long time"
Apple seems to have really screwed the pooch with Car & VR headset distractions and now trying to throw an AI hail mary

The latest gen Apple TV 4K really doesn't need any hardware updates. When I first heard about this rumour, I was thinking it was dubious at best. I could imagine Apple TV one day introducing advanced features like using HomePods for surround sound (more than 2 speakers at once), but that would probably require new HomePod updates first.

I have two Apple TV 4Ks. They work just great (I'm using it now with DirecTV Stream), and have enough capacity for 10 times the apps I have installed. Maybe when broadcasts in 8K start showing up, and I get a bigger TV, I might get a new one. But for now, I don't see the need for a faster processor (it's already way faster than my internet connection), or an upgrade.

Sounds like this going to be an uneventful WWDC filled with AI features I immediately turn off.

I mean, if you like this sort of thing, it will be a lot better for you.

The last time Apple did this, with putting Siri suggestions everywhere, I immediately turned them all off. Siri is useless for anything beyond setting timers and basic stuff like that. I am not expecting anything better now. They've had over a decade to improve Siri and they have no ideas. So there's no way they've suddenly figured it out in the last year.

Hardware isn’t Apple’s problem, it’s software. Most of their devices have processors that are more than enough to last many years but the software is lackluster. The iPad is a prime example…all that hardware power but nothing on the software side to take advantage of it.

IMO, WWDC should be just about software. As fun as it is for Apple to announce hardware, it feels weird to me when they do it at this software event.

Plus, I never expected the Apple TV to be refreshed at this time. That rumor didn’t make sense to me, since I’d anticipate an A18 or A19 chip in the next Apple TV, depending on when it is released.

It's very often been about both
Some of the best or very interesting and/or most iconic hardware has been announced at WWDC

iPhone 4, 2012 MBP 15", iPhone 3G and 3GS, Mac Pro 2006, 2013 and 2019 and PM G5, Cinema Display, HomePod, iMac Pro...

I don't buy this. It means that the M4, which was a surprisingly big leap I thought, is going to sit exclusively in an iPad for.... how many months? There's no reason for that.

If there's no hardware I suppose the logical time for nearly the entire Mac line-up getting M4 / Pro / Max / Ultra / Megabastard would be September to take advantage of all these AI features when the software drops. But that also just doesn't sit right.

Exactly, it doesn't seem right. The only explanation would be that it will announced but avaliablity at a later time.
