I overhead a guy in the apple store bad mouthing the iPhone so i asked him what his problem was. He said he thought it was a piece of crap and gave really no reasons. I gave him the shpiel how it was so amazing and then asked him what phone he uses. He whipped out a VERTU. I was like what the hell is that, it was heavy and wrapped in leather. He said it cost $6000(checked on internet and it does). I asked to see it. It reminds me of an old nokia brick phone. Doesnt do a tenth of the things of the iPhone. It made me feel good to get a phone that does 10 times more than a phone that costs ten times more.

Vertus are basically old Nokia Brick Phones... the best thing they have going for them is the materials they're made out of it, and that's if you're even into that sort of thing. Diamonds and precious metals are not what I'm interested when I think of my cell phone.

At any rate, the guy spent $6K on a piece of crap phone... wouldn't you be pissed too? :)

I went to the Vertu store in Bangkok a little while ago, phone looks just like that along with others that are beautifully sleek. Uber expensive, lacking in features, poor battery life, HUGE price tag, but hey it's a fashion/style statement. Its for exclusivity, and when talking with the sales people they compare it to a fine watch, no frills, just quality/exclusivity. I think that guy in the store probably thought that the iPhone would be an exclusive device and he's probably upset that lots of people have them and that it is not exclusive at all.

I think the exclusivity comes with the perks you get with the phone, like concierge service, reservations, special vacation packages, and such. Its supposed to be the like the American Express Black card of cell phones.

Yeah, but you have a personal concierge button, which when you press you're immediately greeted by someone who's all "Hello Mr/Ms xxxxx, how can I help you?" and you get tickets to sold out shows, and restaurant reservations, and ego gratification etc.

    Each to their own.

That's just about as lame as buying the iPhone as a fashion statement.

    lol. :apple:

For people to understand the logic behind phones like this, just think of Vertus like Ferraris (they even have a special edition for Ferraris). Impractical, Expensive, Environmentally unfriendly, 2 seater, no trunk, too fast, likely to get keyed but uber exclusive. The iPhone is more like a prius - economic, useful, hatchback room, great community of users, can enjoy with friends, environmentally friendly, a fashion statement in itself.

A $6000 phone might want to have more than 4 hour talk time.

    Yeah, that's pretty lame.

I "get" the whole exclusivity thing -- I do. But at least make a halfway decent phone for the ridiculous amount of money that's being spent.

Ummm, if it was "a piece of crap" why was he in the Apple store trying to buy it?

    anyone who owns a Vertu:

    A) has plenty of expendable income
    B) clearly doesn't care about technology
    C) enjoys having a slow, ugly, heavy phone with poor battery life

The only time I ever saw someone using a Vertu was while I was at a Lexus dealership and a man was buying his wife two new Lexus cabriolets. Why was he buying two? Different colors.

also, as far as fashion goes, a glass and stainless steal iPhone isn't too shabby...

Basically he went to the store to have a dick measuring contest. Big deal, I eat self-important goons like that for breakfast. Oh, and the only time I EVER brag about how much I paid for something is to brag how little payed for it, i.e. how good of a deal I got.

i would never compare the iphone to a prius, no offense but foreign cars cannot be compared to an iphone.

I assume you mean "foreign cars" as "cars made by a non-American company".

Which is kind of funny, because the iPhone is made by an American company, but assembled in China, while Toyota just opened a big car manufacturing plant in Texas.

Either way, I'd much rather compare iPhone to a Toyota than any American car company.

while i understand what you are saying, the prius is an economical car, and the iphone is by no means an economical phone, it does cost 2400 bucks over 2 years time ( but that wont stop me from buying one). i would compare it more to a luxury car if anything, like a Mercedez, because you pay a lot for one but you get a lot in return. prius is not a luxury car

That exact feature is available on my GMC truck, along with several other more useful features. Just push the blue OnStar button.

no way. the iphone has much more in common with a ferrari. ferrari's are generally beautifully designed (by pininfarina) as apple are wonderfully designed by jonny ive. whereas the prius looks like it was designed by a child with crayons. the ferrari, like the iphone, backs up it's looks with performance. whereas the prius, although claiming to be highly economical and low emitting, is expensive to buy (compared to similar low emission vehicles) and produce and finds a conventional diesel engined bmw emitting as little co2.
