So, does it have to be done on an iPhone? Is there a more complete list of instructions anywhere? Sorry to be such a newb!

Thanks!!

No, nothing to do with iphone.
You need iphone explorer for save plist file to launchdaemon folder.
Or if you know to it with ssh. That will be more easy.
Just check at ipodtouchfans forum for plist and instructions.
:)

If anyone want more stable script, you can install supercharged.
Just find it on google, i'm sure you can found it.

fairly unstable but this is the iPad Hacks forum so whatever. hopefully this gets updated or put out of its misery by a cydia package but the benefits are more than noticeable.

for those concerned this DOES lock up your iPad intermittently, and isn't awesome for your flash chip, but are you really going to be using the same iPad in 5 years? honestly?

I created it and there does not seem to be any swap files in my iPad when I SSH to check it. Do you guys notice anything else?

This is a critical fix for the iPad. Safari reloading pages once it runs out of RAM is absolutely infuriating and really kills the 'flow' of using the iPad.

Thanks for the link, I will give it a try in a few days once I see some more positive reports.

did you reboot after you save the files ?
check the file at /var/vm

This mod just scared me.. After doing it, it seemed great I had about 11 tabs open from the previous reboot after the mod but only clicked on 4 of them to see wat would happen I assume they only get loaded when u first access the tab.. Well it seemed good until I opened this tab to post it was working great then it all froze, at time B4 accessing this tab I was in sbsettings checking the avail memory and it was well above 70mb, I had to reboot the iPad by holding the home and power buttons and waited for a few minutes to get past the black screen with the apple logo... Then i was scared since I hadn't done a sync before doing this mod.. So I plugged it up to the comp and open iTunes and eventually it started up fine.. Unsure wat was the hiccup was bout but hopefully won't happen again I'm gonna continue testing this hack out, thx again for this mod

As with any mod, you should do them one at a time. Try uninstalling any other hacks you have and then installing them one at a time testing after each install to see what is causing the problem.

I installed this hack and am loving it. The constant refreshing by Safari is so irritating but with this I find using the ipad to browse the web to be enjoyable.

I actually put it into my iPhone to test it out, I saw the swap files but when I put the same file into my iPad, there does not seem to be any swap files. Weird right?

Edit:

I didnt do anything different, now it works. The wonders of computing right?

this is known to happen. im sure the script isn't the cleanest piece of code, and throws some giant memory error every once in while. my iPad crashed almost 10 times the day i installed this mod just from regular use, but god damn was it fast when it was.

I personally decided to uninstall the mod because having my iPad turn off 10 times a day isn't my thing, but hey, im sure it'll get better, and when it does ill be back on the bandwagon

if you can try to install supercharged, it runs much better.
less crash than plain plist from ipodtouchfans.

Well, it works so far. The tabs now don't reload every time, and it seems to work as we envisioned it should. Whether there're hidden/unforeseen side effects, we'll find out, but it's fine for now.

Images Question

Does this improve the ability to cache images as well?

Two examples:

1) Safari craps out halfway down the page whenever I go to a page with lots of wallpapers.

2) Airphoto craps out whenever I try to view very large images from my Mac.

Any relief using VM do you think?

Has anyone noticed faster battery drain after doing this? My battery is draining very fast and I'm wondering if this could be the culprit..

I turned on virtual memory this morning and used it until now and had to disable it. It's extremely buggy at this point and I'm sure its in place as a provisionary feature for OS 4.0 where it will be stable and working as intended. In addition it appears iPad coded apps will have to be coded to access and utilize the virtual memory.

My findings are this:

Current state of enabling virtual memory make the OS think there's an additional 64mb of RAM. This sounds good so far, however apps are programmed to only utilize a certain amount of RAM and here's where the bugs come in... I was able to load 9 heavy web pages into Safari and switch among them without them getting purged and reloaded. However this only lasted a short while where then the entire iPad would completely hard lock and or rebooting automatically.

I also backgrounded Pandora radio and loaded the same 9 webpages and ended up getting a hard lock loading the 5th page.

Without virtual memory I can actually play Pinball HD and Pandora at the same time.. With it enabled it causes an immediate hard lock when I load up Pinball HD after Pandora is going.

So this tells me turning on the native buggy Virtual memory setting is worthless at this time.

I will attempt to try the 3rd party coded app called "Supercharged" and see if it's any better and report back. But I have a feeling its going to act similary.

Technically it shouldn't cause any faster battery drain at all, its only allocating an extra 64mb of space from the SSD to swap with and the SSD is fast enough to move that kind of space very very quickly.

Mine only has crashed 2 other times and fixed always by plugging into iTunes but so far running good.. I want to try supercharged but unsure where to find it info pls.. For now I'll continue testing it because it has been running good

Thanks for the info, I am interested to see if Supercharged behaves any better.
