Earlier this week, an anonymous 4chan user claimed to have obtained images on Snapchat - the ephemeral messaging service that allows users to send pictures that should disappear after a few seconds.

Now, messages posted on the 4chan website suggest that up to 200,000 images will be released soon in an event dubbed ‘The Snappening’.

A third-party Snapchat client app has been collecting every photo and video file sent through the message site for years, giving hackers access to a 13GB private library.

But Snapchat has denied that its service was ever compromised.

How likely is it to be a hoax? And if it's indeed real, will it be anywhere near as big "fappening"?

I don't have any good photos to leak so if it DID decide to leak, it wouldn't affect me at all. Can't say that for some people though.

He's saying that someone claims Snapchat images don't actually disappear (shock!!) and that someone has hacked them (double shock!!) but neither piece of "information" is on topic for this part of the board.

This is the community discussion section. It's like "open chat" for the most part. Not sure why you don't feel as though it is off topic but if you're bent about it then notify a mod. If they see fit then they can move it.

As to the threat, this **** happens and unfortunately there will always be some tool sitting around waiting to show his/her muscle by releasing information to the public that should not be released. It has been happening for years and still people take and send photos they would not normally want to share with the mass public. People don't seem to learn.

This could turn into a child pornography investigation since half of Snapchat users are under 17.

According the the guardian most of it was, "check out my new hat" type pics. Only about 100 mb had any nudes in it.

It was originally posted in the iPhone subsection. This is now the second time I've had to point this out.

You guys all sound gross. Its sad that we still live in a society that objectifies women for their bodies. Of course everyone on this board is saying "well its their fault". No its not their fault. This kind of view is what is hurting society in particular women so much. The whole basis of snapchat is to be able to send pictures that are only their for a "snap" of a few seconds. There needs to be a privacy law. This kind of behavior is disgusting. Clearly we are still in the beginning of the information age if an unknown hacker can just hack into a system and steal data. These companies need to get their **** together. Can you still hack into the governments data? We should all have the same security set up ad the government.

Yes it IS their fault.

ANYBODY that posts nude pics of themselves should expect this sort of thing.

Male or Female.

I'm very sorry that you think it's their fault, you have a very distorted and incorrect view on the world.

I don't see how you think taking pictures intended for private viewing that are then stolen and distributed is their fault. That is insane to me. If they posted them for public viewing, then obviously you're correct.

Question for you: let's say you have a word document on your computer that includes a recent, world changing idea you thought of, and you sent it, privately, to another individual via email. Then, let's say someone hacked into your account and stole the document, and now has access to your invention.

Is it your fault for being in possession of said document and emailing it?

Someone STOLE those pictures. They weren't publicy posted, they were stolen. Whether or not your mind can understand that is a different story, but it doesn't change the simple fact that it is not the victims fault.

What if someone stole pictures on your phone and uploaded them to various websites and publicly ridiculed you? Or what if someone broke into your home and stole physical photos, would you not be upset?

This literally boggles my mind and I cannot understand how people can have a view like you.

Oh wait, yes I can. People don't think everyone should get married either.

Logically, I disagree with your statement, because it falls prey to the "slippery slope" fallacy. The company offers a service that offers secrecy, and confidentiality, which was breached.

So, along the same lines, if I have an illness, should I not tell a doctor? Or should I expect him to break the doctor/patient confidentiality rule?

Should I not sent handle business over email, because I should expect someone to hack it?

The snapchat service offers "snaps" of images. If someone decides to send nude photos, that person is entirely within their rights. The company should have the capabilities to handle this sort of confidentiality, if it is what they are advertising.

I blame the company 100%.

I feel that you blaming the victims because you are judging their actions on a moral scale, as opposed to a legal scale.

Do you know how snapchat works? Or did it skip your generation? Its not like facebook where you post something publicly and its there forever until you delete it. Its supposed to be private unless you put it on your story. Its like sending a picture message through mms on your iphone. Do you expect those messages to get out as well?

To quote Napoleon :

The proof of the pudding is in the taste.

Fact is snapchat lied to people..

A few seconds is enough time to take a screenshot. Why do people think their photos can't be saved if they're only viewable for a few seconds?

Except Snapchat tells you when users take screenshots of your snaps. Pretty certain it didn't at first, but that's not a super new feature, either.

I always tell my gf not to send me anything that should not go public and I don't either. (Although I sincerely believe my buttcheeks are nothing personal so those can be sent)

This said, I still find it wrong to blame the victims in this. They are still victims at the end.

It has always fascinated me that people are more turned on by crappy amateur nude photos of people who don't want them published than by professionally taken nude photos of people who purposely posed for them.

Skin is skin.

Everyone has different tastes. I don't like professional porn/nudes for the most part, as they just do nothing for me. Just as I don't get turned on by Asian women, even though practically every guy I know falls to their knees whenever they see one. Amateur/self-shot stuff tends to have an air of "danger", making it more arousing, while professional stuff tends to look posed and rehearsed. Kind of like professional vs. college sports.

Thankfully, my wife thinks the opposite!

Now, as for the topic, I did download the thing and shuffle through some of it. This is the lamest so-called scandal ever. 99% of the pictures and videos are just people or stuff. And those that are supposedly "naughty" are pretty damn boring, too. This is much ado about nothing for the most part.

Snip

Agreed. I tend to gravitate towards the amateur stuff also..... This will be interesting to say the least if this does come to fruition. However I don't know if I would want to go snooping since the there is a high chance of someone under 18 being mixed in with all the others!

I've only found a couple of things worth looking at, out of thousands I've clicked through. It's pretty much not even worth the download.
