When this thread came up, I was all indignant that the FBI was pulling in data on millions of phones. Now I've searched the list, I'm not in it, and I feel so insignificant... A million devices and mine isn't one of them. I don't even make the top 10^6.

Sometimes I feel like my government doesn't even know I exist...

They only made the first million searchable. There are 11 million that have not been released

> about UDIDS and APNS Tokens <

<pasted a bunch of my tweets here because its relevant (also expended a few things I had to reduce to tweet>

So this UDID leak - it looks more like it came from a 3rd party web-service-api, and Apple should be able to find out which, by correlating the APNS tokens..

APNS tokens are absolutely specific to the device & service they could take ONE and find out which service it was.

So then the question becomes either:
1> why did the FBI have it
or
2> why did anti sec say it came from the FBI?

Um, why are you assuming that, asking what the FBI is doing with particular information is "trying to pretend that you dont know that the govt os watching everything everyone does"?

Oh, and if the Government *is* watching everything everyone does, then they're violating about half a million laws in the process, and need to be called on it.

The government has been violating the constitution for mor than a century, no shocker here.

Ok, so go back to my post. Read the question. Answer it. Then make note of my final statement.

Asking *why* the FBI has certain information is certainly *not* the same as pretending that the government isn't watching us (for various values of 'us'). It's asking *why* they have that information.

It could well be evidence being analyzed for an investigation. (I can't imagine what would make that information useful, but then I don't spend a lot of time imagining criminal activities.)

Or, it could be something they have no right to have. In which case, they need to be held accountable for it.

Privacy in a sea of sharks

". . . turned to be a list of 12,367,232 Apple iOS devices including Unique Device Identifiers (UDID), user names, name of device, type of device, Apple Push Notification Service tokens, zipcodes, cellphone numbers, addresses, etc."
— per Macrumors

;) Either there are over 12 million criminals using Apple iOS devices, or the real villain can be looked for elsewhere.

The hacker group Antisec would be one likely culprit, but one can ignore them as only the messenger. The more poignant question would be what the FBI is doing with the personal information of 12 million plus Apple customers?

Apple can presumably accept some responsibility in this matter, if only in perhaps not having used sufficient discretion. Ideally one would not have to worry about such things, yet we live in an at times dangerous world with many bad actors resident. Many of them infest our government and clearly are up to no good. One should be aware of such perps no less than the concern for any child molester. If that another topic, as long as one is clear on the nefarious intent of the NSA and all other thief's.

Do beware.

Anyone read the NY Times story on this? Total spin, as to be expected. Nothing wrong, security experts say the leak poses little risk, FBI denies, Chen in a tutu....

This story will go away happily if we allow it to. We need to keep this at the top.

I have not, but, if what I have picked up from other websites has led me to believe, it is most likely these UUID's are with developer accounts and such the like. I could be wrong on that assumption, so take it with a grain of salt.

I'm on multiple developer accounts, so that doesn't seem to correlate. (hence the immediate access to 9 device IDs)

*conspiracy theory alert* : You know, the first thing that comes to mind about collecting massive amounts of iphone-specific data is the Cydia/umbrella system and its DNS redirect.

Anyone wise should know that the FBI should not have this info, so what did they want if for?

Thanks for sharing that. Too bad England and America decided to use Orwell's 1984 as a plan.

Oh, and at the point where our information became the property of the government is the point where it fell into the wrong hands.

That's one line of thought. Another is that if we don't want a repeat of events like 9-11, we better darn well skim for ANY hints of acts of terrorism out there. The government is NOT interested in your photos of your girlfriend nor is the FBI even interested in things like how many speeding tickets you have. But if you think there aren't people out there that would love to harm this country and many other Western style democracies, you need to think again.

And if you think groups like the Tea Party are on your side because they claim to want smaller government, you better take a good look at who funds their activities because it's a freaking couple of BILLIONAIRES and their idea of small government is one that lets their investment companies do whatever they want whenever they want with no safety watchdog groups what-so-ever making sure work environments are safe, the people working there are legal citizens and that people are simply steam-rollered over any there's an on-the-job injury and fired and replaced at the drop of a hat due to the company's negligence. You think they really give a crap about our debt or anything else? Yeah right. If you're not a tool of the government, you're a tool of the rich and the corporate big shots. People need to take a good look at who really runs this planet and suddenly 1984 starts to look simplistic by comparison.

I wasn't on the list (checking at a couple of sites) so it has to be with records from police investigations. This seems to be the common thread just like the poster earlier that found his 'stolen' iPhone identifier.

The New York Times is an arm of the government. No different than Iranian state TV.

At least Iranian TV identifies itself as state media, the Times and others like it insist they are somehow "free"

As I wrote yesterday - in a short response - I am not a member of the whack.job Tea Party. I supported Ralph Nadar and identify with the governments of northern Europe and I also fully support the conclusions of "Loose Change: An American Coup "

I will continue to resubmit this post as long as your slanderous accusation against me remains.

I don't know what world you live in, but simply giving an example is not accusing YOU personally of ANYTHING (note the word *IF* and 'groups LIKE' in the example). Until you learn the difference, you will think the world is out to get you and every other paranoid thought imaginable. The fact you are accusing me of slander based on your inability to comprehend what I wrote speaks more volumes about you than it does me. I don't know the first thing about you so how could I be talking about you personally?

OTOH, calling tea party members "whack jobs" really is libel (slander is with spoken words, not print).

The reason this news is so upsetting and so crazy is because if you use this little app called find my iPhone and put in anyone's apple ID ,I mean the one we all use to download apps, It will tell you exactly where that ID is with satellite images and real time updates this news really bothers me...damn Sam just leave me be !!!

Assuming you also know their password....

MOD NOTE: Thread closed until we can cleanup all the off-topic 9/11 posts. When the thread reopens, please remain on-topic. If you wish to discuss 9/11 conspiracy theories, take it to the PRSI forum.

I notice that the post referring to Echelon Keywords has now disappeared too

What's even more interesting is that Google has this thread Cached for all but a few pages, which (by coincidence?) are missing. (Google 404) ;)
