Only one week until the Halo: REACH Multiplayer Beta goes live, so I thought I'd make a thread for all of us to talk about our experiences while playing.

Here is a rough overview of the major details for those who aren't up to speed...

------------------------

- ACCESS -
In order to access the Multiplayer Beta, you need to have a copy of Halo 3: ODST. The Campaign disc has an "Extras" menu. You will use this menu option to, first, download the Beta, and then to play the Beta each time after that. Bungie have said that the Beta will run for about 3 weeks, give or take a couple days.

- SPARTANS vs ELITES -
During the Beta, you will play as either a Spartan or an Elite. This is similar in some regards to the previous 2 online multiplayer Halo games, with a couple major differences...

1 - The Spartan soldiers are of the Spartan III variety. This means that they are not as large, or as powerful as the earlier Spartan II type. The Master Chief in previous games was a Spartan II, for reference. So, you are bigger than the ODST soldiers, but a little smaller than a Spartan II. Due to the fact that you are a Spartan III, you have a regenerating shield, but DO NOT have regenerative health. Health kits will be spread throughout in order to replenish health. Also, falls from great heights will harm or kill you if you are reckless.

2 - The Elites were nerfed a bit for Halo 2 and 3 multiplayer in the hopes of creating balance. But in Reach, the Elite is purposely made more correct to their original intent. The Elites are big, fast and very deadly. They have regenerating shields AND health. Because of their larger size, they take more damage before being killed, but they are also a much larger target, so it all sort of evens out in the end.

For scale...

- LOADOUTS -
One of the major changes for Reach will be the addition of Loadouts. Upon starting the game, or at each respawn, you will be given the choice of a selection of loadouts. These will include various primary weapon, secondary weapon, grenade count and Armor Ability (more on those later). These will vary depending on what playlist you are in, what game type is being played, and even what is going on IN the current game. Pick the one you want, or that suits the current needs of the battle, and go at it. You can still pick up dropped weapons on the battle field, but now you can have a little more choice as to what you start with.

For example...
loadoutssmall.jpg

- ARMOR ABILITIES -
Another major change happening with Reach is the addition of Armor Abilities. In Halo 3, you had access to various equipment that you could use, but it was a one time use thing. Bungie wanted to change that a little, and make them more useful, thus spawned Armor Abilities. These are chosen along with your Loadout, but instead of using them once, they can be used many times, depending on which ability and how long its recharge time is. A meter above the radar in your HUD shows your currently equipped ability, and it's current charge level. Here are the ones that will be available in the Beta...

Jet Pack - (Spartan & Elite)
Just like it sounds, you can now fly. Press the button for a small burst to get up to a high ledge, or hold it longer to get a birds-eye-view of the battlefield. But be wary. You will be very easy to spot up there, and if you go too high, as discussed earlier, a fall from large heights for the Spartan III soldiers will harm or kill. Also, you cannot carry objective items while flying, so don't think that you will just grab the flag and fly away.

Reach_MPBeta_Jetpack.jpg

Armor Lock - (Spartan only)
This is like your own personal Bubble Shield. You drop to one knee, and engage an overcharge on your shield, making you completely invulnerable. If engaged long enough, at the end of your overcharge, you will emit an EMP burst that will deplete shields and immobilize vehicles. So even though you were a sitting duck while locked, you shouldn't be messed with up close.

Reach_MPBeta_ArmorLock2.jpg

Active Camo - (Spartan & Elite)
You already get the main idea behind this one from previous games. You go invisible, making you harder to detect by the enemy. But for Reach, it has been tweaked slightly. For one, the amount that you are "cloaked" depends on your movement. Stand still and don't fire, and you are totally invisible, but start to move around and you become more opaque rather than totally invisible. But also new is the fact that using the Active Camo jams the radar of everyone around you. So, you might be invisible, but everyone knows you are there... somewhere.

Sprint - (Spartan only)
Also new for Reach is the ability to sprint. Just like it sounds, you can run in short bursts to get in and out of cover quickly, or use it in large bursts to cover great distances quicker. You cannot fire while running, and like with the Jet Pack you cannot carry objective items either.

Reach_MPBeta_Sprint.jpg

Evade - (Elite only)
Just as the Spartans have the ability to Sprint, the Elites have a handy new Evade maneuver at their disposal. They can quickly dive forward, backward or side to side in order to quickly get into, or out of, battle. They can evade twice with a full ability meter, though it recharges quite quickly, so it can be used fairly regularly. But like with the Spartan's sprint, you cannot fire or carry objective items while evading.

- WEAPONS -
There are a few new additions, and a few old favorites coming back to Reach.

Returning - (UNSC)
Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle, Shotgun, Rocket Launcher and Spartan Laser. All of these play very similar to before.

New for Halo: Reach - (UNSC)
New for Reach are the Grenade Launcher, Magnum Pistol and Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR). The Grenade Launcher can (obviously) fire grenades, but if you hold the trigger when firing, you can delay its detonation until you release it. The Magnum returns, much like it was in Halo 1, with a 2x scope and great headshot ability. The DMR takes the place of the previous games Battle Rifle, but instead of that gun's 3-shot burst fire, the DMR is a single shot, powerful mid-long range rifle.

Returning - (Covenant)
Plasma Pistol, Needler, Energy Sword and Gravity Hammer. All of these play very similar to before.

New for Halo: Reach - (Covenant)
New for Reach are the Needle Rifle, Focus Rifle, Plasma Repeater and Plasma Launcher. The Needle Rifle is very similar to the Spartan's DMR in that it is a very precise mid-long range weapon, though if a players shields have been removed, 3 more shots will cause an explosion, like the standard Needler. The Focus Rifle is roughly a combination of the Beam Rifle and Sentinel Beam. It fires a constant stream of plasma, but it has a large scope and great precision. The Plasma Repeater is a faster firing version of the old Plasma Rifle, and is comparable to the Spartan's Assault Rifle. The Plasma Launcher will lock on to targets after a short period of tracking, and then fire slightly homing plasma rounds at the enemy which explode on impact. Think of the Halo 3 Missle Pod, but with plasma rounds.

- MAPS -
There will be 4 maps playable in the Beta, all differing in order to test out the various game types and scales of battle.

Powerhouse
An asymmetric map that is built into part of a hydroelectric power station.

ph1b.jpg

Overlook
Also an asymmetric map, but this will only be used for the specific "Generator Defense" gametype during the Beta.

Swordbase
An indoor map, possibly an ONI research base, with many levels and walkways.

Boneyard
The largest multiplayer map, used in the Beta for the "Invasion" gametypes.

------------------------

There have been quite a few more changes to the game with regards to rankings, customization and gametypes, as well as the return of screenshots, film clips, and community features, but I think this post is big enough as is. I've covered many of the main details, but if anyone has any questions, I'll do my best to answer. I'm not the MOST knowledgeable Halo fan ever, but I do really enjoy it and follow it quite a lot, so I can fill in any details if I know them. This Beta should be a great time, and the final game is shaping up to be quite an experience. Next week will be the start of a fun time :D

Fantastic post thanks...
Thank you. :)

I didn't have time last night to post any links to videos, so here we go. These are some of the better ones that have come out recently...

------------------------

Bungie - "Carnàge Carnivàle"
This is Bungie's good overview video from a week or so ago. Good rundown on some of the stuff that will be playable in the Beta...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUv98eWVnL0

Giant Bomb - "Ask Me Anything: Reach"
OK, the guys at GB aren't the biggest Halo fans, and they don't know all the fine details like some might hope. But this video is still 35 minutes long, and filled with gameplay action...

Halo Waypoint - "Full Invasion Match"
During the press event a couple weeks ago, the folks from Waypoint recorded an entire "Invasion" match. Again, this is press people playing, so they aren't the best, but still plenty of action...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rc56vri0SGw

Games Radar - "Luke Smith Destroys the Press" :D
Also filmed during the press event a couple weeks ago, this video is narrated by Luke Smith. He is a former community manager at Bungie, now working directly with the design team. Yes, he plays a lot of Halo, and yes the press is pretty bad, but this video is just hilarious and quite informative at the same time...

The rest of these are links to various website's pages with many Reach videos. I don't want to fill this post up with tons and tons of links, so I'll just direct you to those pages, and you can go from there...

Hey 7"Screw do u have any info on the vehicles? I'd love as souped up Warthog...:D
Bungie have said that there will be some new vehicles in the shipping game, but for the Beta, we will only be able to use some old favorites. Here is what we know so far...

------------------------

Returning - (UNSC)
The Warthog, Mongoose and Scorpion Tank are all making their return to the game, with some slight changes. The Warthog is very similar, but now the chaingun on the back can overheat if you continuously fire for too long. Other than that, seems to be the same old beast we all know and love. The Mongoose looks to be a slightly different model, but gameplay-wise, nothing appears changed. Same goes for the Scorpion. It looks to have been graphically updated a little, but nothing gameplay-wise has changed. They haven't said much about the Mongoose or Scorpion, so any changes are guesses at this point. But, we'll know in a few days. It should be noted, Bungie have shown the new Mongoose, but I do not believe it will be appearing in the Beta.

Reach_MPBeta_Warthog2.jpg
Reach_MPBeta_Scorpion2.jpg

Returning - (Covenant)
The Ghost, Banshee and Wraith Tank are all returning from the Covenant side for Reach. Not much has changed with them, aside from a few small details. The Ghost appears unchanged. Boost and Shoot, you know the drill. The Banshee has been given a graphical update, along with one minor gameplay detail. The main Plasma Cannon the the Fuel Rod Missile are now fired with the same button. You have to hit "Y" to switch between fire modes. Previously the Plasma was right trigger and the Fuel Rod was "B" button. As for the Wraith, like the Scorpion, it appears to be coming in unchanged, aside from the expected graphical update.

Reach_MPBeta_Banshee.jpg
Reach_MPBeta_Wraith.jpg

New - (UNSC)
The only new vehicle they have shown at this point is the new UNSC Falcon aircraft. It will be replacing the Hornet from Halo 3, presumably. They haven't released many details on it yet, but they have said that it will be playable in both campaign and multiplayer. It appears that one person controls the vehicle, while up to 4 other people can ride in the back, though this is not confirmed as far as I know. This will not be available in the Beta. We have to wait for the retail game for the Falcon.

Falcon_02.jpg

------------------------

One major change that Bungie have made to the game is that now the health of the vehicle is no longer tied to the driver's health. In previous games, when the vehicle you were driving was taking damage, you did as well. Now, the vehicles all have separate health. So, if your Warthog is taking heavy fire, and is about to explode, you can exit and still be at full health and have a chance to fight. A very welcome change indeed.

The other change is not officially confirmed yet, but has been noticed in some of the videos. If your vehicle gets hit with an EMP blast, it will completely shut down for a few seconds. Previously being shut down like that would just stop your movement, but you could still fire. Now, you can't do anything. This has only been seen being done to a Wraith in videos, so it is unknown if this is for all vehicles, or just the Wraith, though my guess is all vehicles behave this way.

The end of Halo 2 xbox live is sad but Reach is really looking good. Hopefully Halo: Reach will offer more than a few hours of gameplay. Halo was the first console FPS that had the physics and multiplayer fun of a PC FPS. I was just saying that classes have the potential to ruin the balance, but it is not necessarily a concrete rule. I just hope the camera switches between kills,I want my team mates be focused on the battle and not the guy that just tea bag them. The studio is enlarging the scope of Halo multiplayer, seemingly setting its sights on the team-based shooters that dominate today's online play.

I almost had a panic attack turned on my 360 saw a red light showed up thankfully it was just a e68 aka hard drive being loose took it out put it back in and it worked fine would not want to miss any of the beta sending it back to ms to repair

Got my invite for "Friends & Family" early access. Downloading now, and will report back later with initial impressions. :D

So, I've played quite a lot tonight. I'm still figuring things out, and so far I'm still in that hectic "WTF is going on" kind of phase. One thing is certain, I am NOT very good at this game yet. I've always considered myself an above average player. Not great, but I can get things done when needed. But damn, I'm just sucking in this Beta so far. Anyway, here are some preliminary thoughts...

------------------------

- Armor Abilities as a whole are fun, and very useful. I wasn't sure how those would flow within the scope of a Halo game, but so far I'm really liking them.

- Sprint is good, but it could stand to have a little faster recharge. Once you burn off your charge, it doesn't refill for quite some time.

- Active Camo is great. It is a great give and take ability. Yes you are invisible, but your radar also gets all scrambled, so you have to choose when to use it wisely.

- Haven't used the Jet Pack much, but it works like you would imagine. Hit it, and you lift off. The thing is, it is quite loud. So, while you are elevating above the fight, everyone can hear you take off, and you are often picked off if you try and fly to long.

- Armor Lock is the one I've used the least. It works well, when you use it, but I often find myself using it at the wrong time, and then I get quickly taken out when I emerge from it. This will be an interesting one to see how it gets used and evolves.

- Grenades are just ridiculous. They have much more power now, and the blast radius seems huge. If you hear a grenade hit anywhere even REMOTELY close to you, you need to sprint/evade out quick, or you're dead. Simple as that. Not sure yet if this is really a good or bad thing yet, it's just different.

- Stockpile is one of the new game modes, and it is AWESOME! I've always been more of an Objective player rather than just Slayer. This mode is great. It is like capture the flag, but there are multiple flags scattered around the map. You grab them, and then at scheduled times in the match, if you have them in your "zone", they get scored. First to 10 scores wins. Flags can be removed from the zones as well, so you have to capture, but also stand guard. Very fun.

- I've only played a couple games of Headhunter, but I'm not really liking that one. Every time someone dies, a skull pops out of their body. You grab the skulls, and then score them at certain zones that move randomly around the map. I was having trouble actually getting the skulls to pick up. You are supposed to just walk over them and they get auto picked up, but it wasn't working very well for me.

- The new Assassination thing is a little touchy. You can still just do a normal single beat-down and assassinate someone from behind. But, if you hold the melee button down, you launch into this extra assassination animation. Problem is, I keep activating this even when I don't mean to. They need to enlarge the amount of time needed to hold the button to activate this.

- There are only 2 maps available right now, with the other 2 coming online in the coming week or so. Right now only Sword Base and Powerhouse are available. I'm liking them. Powerhouse is very fun on Stockpile and KOTH. Sword Base is a little different, and has almost too many levels. Maybe I just need to learn it more, but I can't figure out where I'm going many times because there are so many flights of stairs and ramps and things.

------------------------

Other than that, I'm still just sort of getting a feel for the game. It has the sort of familiar feel of Halo, but enough things are different that it is taking some time to get used to them. And like I said before, I really need to work at this game more, because I'm just terrible right now. If the game is objective based, I'm OK. But if it is anything Slayer related, I can't seem to ever kill anyone. Oh well, I'll give it time. Once more of my friends get it, and I can party up with them, I quickly stop worrying about how good I am, and just go back to having fun. And fun is something that I seem to have a lot of with Halo.

------------------------

Here are a couple video's I've rendered from my File Share. The first one is just a funny moment I had with the Hammer and the Elite's new "Evade" maneuver in a game of Covie Slayer. The second one is a longer one of me kicking ass in a game of Stockpile. I kill the same guy twice with the rockets, and then rack up a bunch of points and get us back in the lead. We eventually won. It was a fun match.

So if I rent ODST I can access the beta?
Yes, the main menu of the campaign disc has the link. On May 3rd, when the Beta goes live for everyone using the ODST disc, you will use the "Extras" menu on that disc to download the Beta. You will need to keep the game on hand though, as you need to have it to start up the Beta every time you wish to play.

Here are the instructions right from Bungie...

Cool works for me. I stopped buying games the past couple months to save for an iPad but got Blockbuster GamePass. ;)

I have been very impressed with what I've seen of this game so far. The new armor and loadouts are an awesome addition. I think this game is going to be much better than Halo 3 is.

Does anyone know if you can do splitscreen with a guest in the Beta? I hope so. I've also heard rumors of Reach having Firefight. Anyone know anything about that?

I haven't tried it, but I've heard that it works just like normally. So yes, you should be able to bring guests in just fine.
I hope so. I've also heard rumors of Reach having Firefight. Anyone know anything about that?
Hasn't been confirmed yet, but Bungie has said that "Removing big features from a game that were in previous versions is not something they do." So, that doesn't really confirm anything, but I'd say it is a safe bet that Firefight, in some form or another, will be in Reach.

free xbox live weekend, but doesnt this come out on a weekday?

:( got no gold membership anymore and would really like to play...

There are a couple gametypes that aren't active in the Beta just yet, so I'm going to hold off playing until I can try those to form a full opinion, but I will say this right now. This game better improve, DRASTICALLY, between now and launch, because right now it's a mess. I'm trying to understand some of the changes that Bungie have made, but after a full weekend of playing the game, many of those changes are beyond me. It doesn't seem to matter what mode I play, or whom I'm playing with, the game has so many frustrating things that I seldom have any enjoyment playing. And this is coming from a long time Halo fan.

I'm sure I will end up getting the retail game this fall, but only for Campaign and Firefight at this point. Multiplayer has always been a hit or miss thing with me. And right now, the game is a HUGE miss, in my opinion.

Downloading now. Yeah i heard Bungie said some where that They really wanted to focus on the Campaign and thats probally why the online may be weak at the moment Considering this is quite possibly the Last Halo game so i'm sure Bungie wants to go out with a bang on the story line.

Excellent evolution of the Halo experience, I don't know how I lived without that sprint button in the past!

Keeps refusing to log into the server and losing my progress, credits and "purchased" armour though.

Boo!

So, today was the day when the Beta finally went live for everyone using ODST. I'd been playing for about 5 days now thanks to "Friends & Family" access, but it had not been a very good time. It seems that most people who were playing during the F&F time period were much above my skill level. I could hardly kill anyone, and was having a pretty crappy time. That changed today.

It was refreshing to see the new influx of players today, so that the new "behind-the-scenes" player ranking system could work with a much larger pool of players, and I must say it seems to work well. From the main "Matchmaking" menu, just select SKILL as your main search criteria, and go at it.

I played some standard games and had a decent time, but in the new Arena system was where this totally shined. I've played about 6-7 games in there so far, and I think they have all been decent matchups. This is great, because even though I'm not the world's best player, I still want to have fun and exciting games. My daily rating right now is currently at 1556, which is about where I figured it would be.

So, all is not so much DOOM & GLOOM like my last post. More people have helped things quite a lot. There ARE still a few issues that I hope are changed before the retail game ships later this year, but overall the multiplayer aspect is pretty good. I'm eagerly awaiting "Invasion" mode later this week. I love objective-based games, and that mode seems right up my alley. I hope it is.

Wow, I'm really impressed. Halo was starting to feel boring, and I wasn't really a fan of Halo 3 online. It felt just like Halo 1 & 2. Now they actually mixed things up enough for it to seem new, and I love it. The class selection is great, I really like the maps, and the new weapons are awesome! Still haven't tried a UNSC grenade launcher, but the needler rifle and plasma launcher are awesome. Matchmaking seems fairly balanced, but it's quite fun.

My only complaint is that people always pick up/drop the flag in CTF. So you hear FLAG DROPPED etc 100x in a row. I mentioned this on Twitter and Bungie said they fixed it for the full release :D

Wow, Reach is great. I am very impressed with how well it plays. I am not a big halo fan but did play halo 3 alot when it came out, and this is a way different game. I think they are trying to get some of us COD players to join the halo party. I'm definitely buying it.

As of today, I am officially done playing Halo as a competitive multiplayer game. This game has so many thing that I consider wrong, I can't have any fun any more. I'm not exactly sure what happened last night, because today it was basically the exact opposite, and right back to the same stuff that was happening during my early access.

So, that's it. I'm done. Halo will from now on only be Campaign and Firefight for me. What a waste of time making this thread for such a broken, messed up game. :(
