The 2011 will very likely experience discrete GPU failure very soon (surprised it is still alive) - i'd sell it and trade-up while it still works.

I have a dead 2011 15" sitting in my room.. mine has been dead for 5 years.

They certainly are great machine until they die. But would not spend a cent on a 15" macbook from this vintage at this point, as you really are rolling the dice. They have an inherent GPU fault that Apple had a repair program for, but that program is now ended. Not sure if you'll be able to get repairs if it does die any more?

As stated in my previous posts, I disabled the Discrete GPU. only running the integrated.

Honestly man, I would try to make the money work to replace your two Macs with a newer machine.
I can see that. too late tho cause the order is half way here (with the upgrade, I could make more money). I think a lot of it is that I like the design of this generation though. on the other hand I'd like a Retina display

Parts came and just finished upgrading. It's like night and day!!!

edit: The drive was slightly smaller than the spot to place it in and didn't come with a bracket to secure it. So I duct taped it to secure it! Lol. I figured SSDs can't get that hot so it should be fine.

Hey antisominc, your MBP 2011 15" still working good?
I am undecided in acquiring a mbp 2012 13" or mbp 2011 15"
Do you feel a lot of difference between both ?
regards

Still running a 2011 13" MacBook pro with 8GB Ram and a 250GB SSD. Not having any problems.
Swapped the dvd drive for an adapter and have a 1TB HDD for extra storage.

If you are on High Sierra, what will you do when sometime this fall the security updates stop?

I don’t feel a major difference other than screen resolution. The resolution on the 13” is poor whereas the 2011 it's at least full HD and I use QuickRes to scale my resolution to 1920x1200. Other than that the only speed differences are based on the fact that my 2011 has a more modern SSD and 16gb RAM instead of 8gb

Just keep using it? Plenty of old Macs are doing just fine.
Agree, the hardware is likely going to run long after the security updates stop. Risk would likely be fairly low for everyday use. Still a good assumption for accessing financials? Just wish that there was a long term stable version of MacOS.

Just a fo
Hate to be the last 3 posts (Mods feel free to merge). But anyone else make a similar upgrade to a 2011? If so, how well does it run? im expecting it to run like a brand new out of box machine.

I added a Samsung SSD (1 TB), converted the optical drive to a 2 TB Seagate external HD (took out the HD from the casing and installed it using an adapter for the optical drive using SATA III cable), and upgraded to 16 GB of RAM. Working like a dream.

Just trying to figure out what external monitor I can use because I had the motherboard replaced when the GPU failed a few years back. Everything has been fine since then, however, I'm not sure if my GPU is disabled. Is there a way to check?
