"hand pointer" cursor not appearing when hovering over links

Hi there, just got my brand new mac book pro and really enjoying it. Slight problem; earlier on in the day, the hand pointer cursor was appearing when I hovered over a link as expected, however it's now either appearing for a fleeting second or not at all.

Any help resolving this would be much appreciated.
