I recently ripped a DVD with the Apple TV setting in Handbrake.
I sent it to the Atv and checked it against the actual DVD.
    I am using a Pioneer BDP-51FD DVD player>HDMI>Pioneer 5080.
Screen settings for player and Appletv are identical.

The Handbrake rip looked a tad soft compared to the DVD.
subtitles were a hair fuzzy on Apple tv and super sharp off the DVD.
But the color was much worse.
Compared to the DVD- which looked very bright and well saturated- The Apple tv looks very dull- no pop.
I suppose if I only watched the AppleTV version- it would pass as OK- but when you switch over to the upscaled DVD it's a world of difference.

My HDMI output on the Atv was set to AUTO. I tried changing it- but it did nothing.

Is there a a setting in Atv I should know about?
Or better yet- what is the best setting for Handbrake?
    I am ripping with a Apple TV pre-set. I checked the 64bit MP4.
I also check Detelecine and set Deinterlace to Fast.
Is there anything else I can do?
Or is the best Handbrake can do?
If so- as much as I like the idea of running all my movies from a single HD- I would much rather watch quality and I guess I need to keep my DVD's.

Do not use a deinterlacer (especially fast) on non-interlaced content.

Make sure you are using .9.3 and have updated the presets. The new AppleTV preset generates pretty good encodes... you can also enable the decomb picture filter to selectively deinterlace if necessary.

For that matter, if you're interested in quality don't use hb's fast deinterlacer on anything. Period.

Updated to .9.3 and the first rip came out all screwed up.
I simply chose the Apple tv pre-set.
The image is broken up and will not play.
    Full of little pixel squares.

My macbook is the latest intel.
    What's going on?

Also make sure you have the latest version of VLC in /Applications, not ~/Applications or somewhere else.

    OK- figured it out.
But the synced file to Apple tv is still off color.
The file plays fine on the macbook and looks good- so I'm thinking it's the Appletv. I can't seem to find any controls.
