15" rMBP 2.3 i7 8GB

Ran the test on my 15" rMBP 2.3 i7 and 8GB RAM.

Time: 4:24
Avg FPS: 54.404984

For Comparison:

2012 27" iMac 3.4 i7, 24GB RAM, 680MX, Samsung 830 256GB SSD (via Thunderbolt).

Avg. FPS: 67.479836 fps
Time: 3:35

Mac Mini 2.3Ghz Quad core i7 with 16GB crucial ram

2 min 34
60fps

Something doesnt seem correct, there were 14314 frames, should take just under 4 mins ( 238seconds)
The progress bar shows steady progression until just over 50% then tells me the encode is complete, yielding a 6 min 05 second clip.

Can anyone help as I was considering returning the mac mini in exchange for an 3.4Ghz imac, but this result has made me think twice.
this was the file i downloaded, all 476 MB of it

Yeah, that definitely doesn't seem right. You do have the proper file (from what I can tell). And you converted using the Apple TV 2 preset? I would expect that the 2.3 i7 Mini would take just a bit longer than the 2.3 rMPB I posted just above.

Oddly, I'm having so many issues with my 3.4 iMacs (on my 3rd) that I'm debating going Mini. How're the fans when you run Handbrake? Very loud? I had a 2.0 i7 when they first came out and it just seemed to loud. Wondering if Ivy Bridge is any cooler.

EDIT: Just checked my Big Buck file size and its 900MB+, so I think you don't have the whole file.

2012 Mac Mini 2.6 i7

Results from 2012 Mac Mini 2.6 i7, 16GB RAM.

Time: 3:50
Avg FPS: 62.534706

That's very impressive. Were you using the stock HDD, or your thunderbolt SDD?

That's now about 50% faster than my old MacPro, in mini format. I think it might be time for me to change machine!

Right?! Outside of the fan noise at 5500 RPMs, I was very impressed with the encode times.

And yes, that was on the stock 1TB HDD but with updated RAM (16GB).

Hackintosh 3.5 i7 Ivy Bridge

Just built a Hackintosh (Gigabyte Z77X-UP5-TH), 3.5 i7 Ivy Bridge, 16GB RAM, Intel HD4000.

Time: 3:28
Avg FPS: 69.221420

*Updated - OC'd to 4.2GHz and RAM to 1800MHz.

Retina MBP 2.7 i7, 16GB, 512SSD.

Time: 3:52
Avg FPS: 61.791714

It's interesting that the Mac Mini 2.6 i7 ran a little faster than the rMBP. I would have expected the rMBP to have been slightly faster just due to the GPU (as I found when I pitted the first 2.0 i7 Mini and MBP a while ago.)

2011 15' Macbook Pro i7 2.2ghz 8gb RAM - Crucial M4 128gb

1: 48.0784
2: 44.3451
3: 44.2570
4: 48.7823

With fans set to max and on a cooling pad w/ramdisk I can average 48 or so, the 44's are without anything fancy. no fan control, just on the SSD.

Here are my results ...

iMac 27 2011 i7 3.4GHz 32GB RAM, source internal 128 Vertex 4 -> destination internal 1TB factory HDD

3 61.315968

iMac 21 2011 i5 2.5GHz 16GB RAM, source internal 240GB SSD Vertex3 -> destination internal 500GB factory HDD
1 40.364098
2 39.788197
3 40.129646

Macbook Air 13 2012 i5 1.7 4GB 128GB SSD (factory)
1 25.544615

2011 MBP 17" 2.5Ghz Quad i7 / 8GB Ram / 250GB SSD (Samsung 840)

Average of three runs:

FPS: 51.54
Time: 4m 13s

Temperature stabilized @ 85C, 3800-4000 rpm on the fans.

2013 MBPR 2.4 i7 8gb Ram

1. 2:20 60fps
2. 2:21 60 - 61fps

These numbers don't seem right. Are you sure you calculated the time correctly? 60FPS should be closer to 4 minutes total time. Or if the time is correct, your FPS is way off. 2:20 should be more like 95-100FPS.

And is this a Haswell or Ivy Bridge rMBP?

It's ivy, somehow handbrake finishes the video in that time frame. What I found weird is the conversion is done, but handbrake didn't encode the entire source, only about 55 percent and then stops and says its finish.

Yeah, something isn't right there. On my Ivy 2.7 I'm getting around 62 FPS (at least back in Mountain Lion). There was someone that only seemed to have downloaded half the video source (his was around 500MB and I think the source was 900MB+). Any chance the source is incomplete?

Could be. The movie plays all the way through to the end, but the file size was suppose to be 900MB+ , but like you said it gave a successful download around 500MB or so. Would probably need a better source.

That's interesting. Are you sure you scrolled down and downloaded the 1920x1080 MP4 version? I'm showing the source is 886 MB.

I know this thread is old, but I just want to add mine:

MacBook Air 13-inch Mid-2013
Intel i5 1.3GHz (4th Generation Haswell)
8GB RAM

Encoding time: 9:51
Average FPS: 24.3

Just for grins:

Late 2013 Mac Pro
6-core 3.5Ghz Xeon / 32GB RAM / 2x D700 6GB video / 512GB SSD

Time: 2 minutes 33 seconds
Average fps: 93.3

Gonna bump this old thread...Anyone run this test with a retina iMac? Getting an itchy trigger finger
