Handbrake for video conversions?

I read Handbrake's site and I am really confused. Can I have Handbrake convert a, say avi file to an mp4? or does it only work with dvds.

nope only works for DVDs. try ffmpegx (open source) or VisualHub (shareware) to convert avis.
